Black Vultures Mate for Life

Black Vulture couple spends some quality time behind the Backyard. You can tell by the twinkle in their eyes they are deeply in love. They are monogamous and mate for life but don't build traditional nests in trees.

Another lovely couple is at: https://youtu.be/FJcsyvNxLRo

Blue Gray Gnatcatcher Catches a Gnat and Calls

Blue Gray Gnatcatcher briefly caught in the act of catching a gnat and calling a few times in a very high pitch if you listen close. A very rare tiny bird to get on video in their wintering grounds as they flit rapidly through trees and brush looking for small insects. This is only the second time I've gotten one on film. Three years ago almost to the day I captured this one for a few seconds: https://youtu.be/IM0drga_Mo4

Yellow Bellied Sapsucker Woodpecker Juvenile

A juvenile Yellow Bellied Sapsucker woodpecker stops by the Backyard. A pretty little bird its brown feathers are gradually being replaced by black. A rare sight, these migratory woodies are not seen that often in winter. At the end when it flies off you can catch a glimpse of the "yellow belly"!

BlazeVideo 16MP 1080P Night Vision Game & Trail Camera Review

Lots of bird and wildlife examples! A great trail camera for capturing what's going on in the Backyard. BlazeVideo provided this camera to test out on Backyard critters and it did an excellent job of triggering on Painted Buntings and squirrels etc. providing clear photos and video at unusually close range. Great for tracking wildlife and for security, but I especially like it for documenting bird and wildlife behavior when I'm not around. Available at Amazon at: https://amzn.to/2FAV42x.

As I noted above and in the video this camera was provided by the manufacturer for a fair and honest test and review. My opinions are my own.

Red Shouldered Hawk Calling

Red Shouldered Hawk calls from the top of a tall Norfolk Pine Tree and of course attracts the attention of the Blue Jays who like to imitate this hawk see: https://youtu.be/WLBaChHwZ1Y Although at the top of the Florida Backyard food chain these big hawks are not a serious threat to smaller birds and squirrels - they are just not agile and stealthy enough. The much smaller Cooper's Hawks are the one that catch them off guard.

Red Squirrels Dispense Harsh Justice

It's hard to watch, but we enjoy the cute and happy times and we should share in their tough times to truly understand the harsh life of these little creatures. This young red squirrel who you first met being thrown off the deck in https://youtu.be/oR9cZH6WEdg  is probably a rebel and didn't learn that lesson and has suffered a severe beating by the looks of injuries to its face and a few other places. The poor thing stayed on my deck for a full two days eating slowly and staying away from the clan and sleeping in the deck wren box for warmth for two nights then leaving. They are tough and he will survive and hopefully live a long and full squirrel life, but will have to display deference to be accepted by Red Squirrel society - at least until he gets full grown.

Wild Rabbits Enjoy Breakfast

Mother Rabbit and another enjoying breakfast in late summer and fall. You can see in detail what natural food they choose to eat, it appears clover is the choice. Rabbits are relaxing to have around as they are generally mellow and hang out for hours sometime without any drama. I love Squirrels and Blue Jays but they are much higher maintenance.

Terrifying Sounds in the Forests of the Great Smoky Mountains

Terrifying Sounds in the Forests of the Great Smoky Mountains

Part Roar - part Scream - this is perhaps the best recording ever of these mythical creatures! Hear cracking branches and these Incredible noises nearby in the dense woods alone and you will never forget it! Do you freeze or walk faster? Rarely ever seen in the thick steep trackless mountain woods they are both immense and largely invisible in heavy cover. These extremely detailed and close recordings are of a once-extinct giant creature that again roams the mountain forests of North Carolina captured over several days in late September 2018. Some people now want to kill these magnificent creatures all over again.....Why?
Note to potential users of these recordings: Copying the unique audio from this video for any other unauthorized use is a violation of copyright law and they can be easily and definitively matched. If you would like to use any portion of the audio contact me via e-mail.

Gray Squirrel Tail Wagging and Scent Marking Communication

I have not captured fascinating squirrel behavior quite like this before. Lengthy silent provocative tail wagging and scent rubbing by what appears to be a female is not an alarm signal and either territorial or sexual in nature.
Filmed with Canon SX60:
https://amzn.to/2SXDngo
I'm no squirrel body language expert but it is about time for the winter mating to start. Particularly fascinating is the clear view of flexing of the anal area around
1:30 which may have scent glands and the abdominal contractions seen around 4:00 from a different angle which is probably causing the flexing seen around 1:30. There are few scholarly articles on this subject. Note the loud Blue Jay that is not at all happy that it is being ignored by me. They get jealous when I spend too much time filming squirrels. Amazing birds!

Turtle Follows Stepping Stone Path Then Needs Rescued

This takes the cake - whatever happens in the Backyard doesn't surprise me anymore! Big wild Turtle comes out of the conservation area and strolls down the stone walkway and then needs to be rescued. BTW I believe it is a Peninsula Cooter Turtle.

Blue Jay's Amazing Display of Athletic Prowess

You wont believe your eyes - I didn't - until I slowed the video down to frame by frame slow motion. What ever you think of Blue Jay's Backyard character there is no doubt they are magnificent and under-appreciated birds. Here I'm testing out the new Blaze Video trail camera https://amzn.to/2qvGrmR (there is no sound) and its not even adjusted in the proper position yet and this Blue Jay wants the peanuts, but is unusually wary of the new camera. I have not seen this extreme display before, the jay never loses eye contact with the camera and it is possible it is trying to intimidate it or just embolden itself or practicing the snatch and grab technique. A second successful grab for a peanut happens in the blink of an eye.

Painted Buntings Return, Squirrels, Thrashers, Catbirds and Mockingbirds

Back in the Florida Backyard and the Painted Buntings and Catbirds have arrived - of course the squirrels and usual suspects are waiting as well. BTW the Woodlink Absolute Squirrel Resistant Bird Feeder Model 7533 shown in the video see: https://amzn.to/2QiJSse really is squirrel-proof and can be adjusted to be Blue Jay proof so you can let the buntings, cardinals and finches have their own feed source see: https://youtu.be/BK6eRZ4YBQE
Amazing to see Catbirds, Mockingbirds and Brown Thrashers all within minutes, they are the only members of the Mimic bird family. They are no seed eaters generally.

Blue Jays Are Like Flying Chipmunks

How many sunflower seeds can a big Blue Jay hold in its crop and beak at one time? You can count them, I came up with over 30 on at least one trip - see thumbnail photo. Winter is coming and just like the Chipmunk that fills its cheek pouches the Blue Jay fills its crop and beak and caches the seeds for later use during the winter. Smart Birds! Blue Jays are one of my favorites so if the Blue Jays are scarfing up all the sunflower seeds you just need to put more out so all the birds have their share :-)
