Yes of course there really is such a bird as a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker and I usually only see them in the Backyard woods in winter. A mature female spends an unusual amount of time posing for us on a long leaf pine tree while a juvenile sapsucker visits the Backyard fence looking for ants. They are actually quite stunning birds as are the Red Bellies and Northern Flickers which are of similar size. Thanks to generous donations last season we are ready to go with two new GOLBONG Green-Backyard Nest Box Cameras in the Screech Owl and Woodpecker nest boxes this season. Mourning Dove stands up to the big, aggressive and scary-looking Grackles and holds the feeder. Eventually the two grackles give up. Often considered one of the meekest song birds at the feeder I have found just the opposite in the Backyard!

The call of the Endangered male Snail Kite on the St. John's River in central Florida is rather low-key but unique for a raptor. This male kite patiently waits to spot an Apple Snail moving on aquatic vegetation and then snatches it and expertly remove the tasty morsel with its uniquely adapted claws and beak. Escargot for breakfast it doesn't get any better than this!

Endangered male Snail Kite (a type of Hawk) on the St. John's River in central Florida flying low over the marsh using its keen eyesight to spot large Apple Snails to grab. A critically Endangered species all Florida Snail Kites are precious as their habitat continues to be destroyed. They are now only found in central and southern Florida. They have adapted an extreme hooked beak and and extra long talon that are used to remove apple snails from their shells - their only food source. To find the snails they need shallow clear open water and then they grab them with their talons. There was a Great Blue Heron standing right next to me the whole time I was filming and when the kite was done with his air show I looked at the heron and he looked at me like - wow that was impressive!

Juvenile Red Squirrel has the most luxurious and long tail for such a little thing. Just out of the nest box it is scared a bit by the big ol' Blue Jay, but quickly gets used to it.

Honey Bee hive update from the squirrel nest box. Honeybees are fascinating to watch up close where you can see all the individuals. Kind of addicting really! The bees have built an impressive hive that is now extending well outside of the nest box and the bees have settle into their routine. If you watch closely you can see the different roles that the bees fill. Watch for one one the edge of the comb that appears to be directing traffic.

Intense Bird drama unfolds in the forest edge and we can hear it all, but not see what's going on until the very end. Its all about understanding bird behavior by ear! The call of a Coopers Hawk is really quite unusual and sounds very similar to a Pileated Woodpecker. But the forest birds led by the Blue Jays and Crows know that call and put the whole forest on alert. I stick with it until I find this apex predator.

Watching the Red Squirrel kittens on their first day out of the nest box is always a hoot. Mom pretty much gives up on controlling them and any thought of keeping a low profile is quickly out the window. I feed these very young squirrel just sunflower seeds and not unsalted peanuts - there will be time enough for peanuts later! Enjoy.....

Two handsome Painted Buntings, a bright Song Sparrow, a hungry Mockingbird, a stealthy Eastern Phoebe (a type of flycatcher) and finally a Catbird ironically trying to sing while big dogs barking drown out the effort and he gives up. Noise pollution is annoying to us but it can stop the songbird from getting their message out. Slices of Backyard Bird life - Enjoy!

I found this little guys secret grass tunnel into the Backyard back fence from the conservation area. These are native grass loving rats and use grass tunnels to get around. As rats go Cotton Rats which live naturally in the conservation area are kind of cute and if you landscape right wont come anywhere near the house as they are very cautious about predators since they are the bottom of the food chain. They are about the size of a Chipmunk and never get far from the safety of the fence. Like clockwork the Painted Buntings have returned to the Backyard. They love white millet and heavy cover nearby. A couple of impressive males and a lot of "Greenies". There are several cameo appearances by the usual suspects, but see if you spot the very brief and rarest cameo of all - a Carolina Wren meets Bunting!

These bees are really fascinating to watch close up - sort of a Bee Meditation. Thousands of Honey Bees Swarm over the Squirrel Condominium Nest Box in the oak tree and fill it up with honey comb in a matter of days. Squirrel Condos are great for squirrel nests and are made of cedar wood which usually repels bees but not this year. As long as they stay out of the owl nest box we're golden.

Amazing little squirrel is about to explode! This juvenile Red Squirrel had only been out of the nest box a few days when it went on an extended and quite amazing vibrating, squeaking, barking, sneezing and snorting rant at one of its siblings. Reds are infamous for being a little high strung and it appears they are just born that way.

Fledgling Rose Breasted Grosbeak patiently waits in an Eastern Hemlock tree. It is very late in the season mid-October in the southern Appalachians and these birds need to start heading south soon.

Carolina Wren calling "Cheater - Cheater - Cheater" rapidly eleven times loud and clear. The Carolina Wren is a small bird with a big singing voice and in my experience prefers the cover of deep brush and woods and is difficult to photograph in their true wild forest environment like this. I caught a glimpse of it making the first string of "cheater" calls, but could not find it in the deep cover on video. Often their call is a loud "Teakettle Teakettle Teakettle" but here the rarer "cheater" call is unmistakable!
The Painted Buntings are back and the "Greenies" are cuter than ever as they take a community bath. This is a special bird bath for small birds that I fashioned out of a ceramic planter plate. the little birds don't like the water too deep but in this they just wade right in and have too much fun.
