Brown Headed Cowbirds have been mobbing the feeders recently. They flock up in the winter and then disperse to breed in the Spring so they wont be here but a day or two before moving on. They will clean out platform feeders and such, but the caged feeders remain safe for the smaller birds like finches and buntings. A short discussion of these birds is included. They are native birds and not at all unattractive they just tend to wear out their welcome pretty fast.

Its Northern Cardinal 🐦 nesting season and Mr. Cardinal is singing away from all the high spots defending his territory, he is already paired up with a female cardinal. Cardinals may hang together loosely in winter up north, but not in the breeding season the males will chase other males away from the Backyard.

My Blue Jay Buddy imitates Red Shouldered Hawks and Ospreys or "Fish Eagles" back to back. Blue Jays song repertoire is under appreciated. Every season there is always one Blue Jay that is more outgoing and open to interacting with me than the others. This is its way of getting my attention and also presumably discouraging other birds from competing for the peanuts I give out due to the possibility of an avian predators. Except Ospreys really don't eat birds. This Osprey mimicking behavior has been documented in Florida before , but audiovisual documentation is not that great including one I captured back in 2019 https://youtu.be/eYJwzZH1P8A . I consider myself fortunate to finally catch a very close and clear "impersonator" in the act.

Mother Screech Owl fooled me she has switched to the Woodpecker Nest Box and laid three eggs. I believe on March 5,7 and 9. She disappeared from the owl box and I though they had given up for some reason but I heard a noise from the woodpecker box and sure enough there she was! This box is a tight fit and doesn't have all the extra cameras I installed on the new box they used last year. That's OK I'm sure she has her reasons. So expect hatching to start around March 31st and fledging by the end of April.
I have not found the roosting spot of the male in the nearby tree, they are extremely hard to find as they blend in with the tree.

The female Red Winged Blackbird looks very similar to a dark sparrow-like bird, but is a pretty bird in its own right with sharp pointed beak and long rounded tail.

This film covers two months of birds bathing at a mountain spring in the Great Smoky Mountains from late Summer into Autumn as the leaves fall and temperature drop.
