Atlantic Puffins of Maine's Coastal Islands

The iconic Atlantic puffins are one of the most widely recognized birds of the Northern coastal waters. With a colorful bill that seems too perfectly painted to be real, puffins have a photogenic, cartoon-like appeal. So on a recent trip to Maine in late May a sea-going Puffin and Wildlife tour was the highest priority on my list of things to do. Since I was camping in Acadia National Park I booked a Puffin and Wildlife tour out of nearby Bar Harbor run by Acadian Boat Tours which includes some lighthouse stops on the way out and back and lasts about 3 ½ hours at a very reasonable $55 bucks. Harbor Seals, razorbills and a variety of other seabirds were also observed. Well I have to say they delivered on the Puffin viewing for me, anything more was a bonus. Blue Jays (clearly extroverts) and Doves (introverts?) are two songbirds that you think you can read their expressions as they seem to wear their emotions on their sleeves. I love this little bird slice of life at the Mountain Spring as a Blue Jay shows nuance in getting its way and the Dove tries dealing with the Jays head games by ignoring, but then throws in the towel. Cowbirds are one of the bird species that benefits greatly from human modification of the environment at the expense of other birds. Cowbirds are brood parasites which means they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and do not care for their own young. Their parasitic reproduction strategy is unique among the world's blackbird species. Historically, cowbirds were restricted to the Great Plains in short-grass prairies, where they followed buffalo herds, feeding on insects stirred up by the grazing animals. It was not until the native forests of the eastern United States were opened up and interspersed with agriculture and livestock that cowbirds were able to invade. Few songbirds like a long soaking bath in the mountain stream more than robins. But recent heavy rain turned the normally relaxing bird bathing area into more like a wirlpool - much to the dissatisfaction of mother robin who really wants her bath.  The robins like water too much not to figure it out – the Dove's may take a little longer. For planning your own backyard bird habitats remember birds love a little movement in the water.

It was cold, foggy, spitting rain, windy and an overall dreary day which is not particularly unusual in coastal Maine in May as I found out, but the light was good enough for video and the scene was fascinating and beautiful. .
