All parts of the Yellow Buckeye tree, the largest of the buckeyes, are toxic - potentially deadly - the leaves, bark and nuts — because of compounds that cause muscle weakness, paralysis, intestinal distress and vomiting to all animals ---- except squirrels!
The forest floor under a yellow buckeye tree in early fall is littered with the shells opened by squirrels with the buckeyes either eaten or stored away for winter.

A Cooper's Hawk takes a nice soak in the little stream flowing from a spring in the Great Smoky Mountains. This is the best Cooper's Hawk video yet! If you listen closely and at high volume you'll hear an Eastern Chipmunk doing their monotonous cluck cluck cluck call which they do all the time in early Fall, but in this case it is a warning for the hawk in their territory as they are prime food for the forest hawk.

Mother Raccoon and her only surviving kit, as raccoon babies are called, are out of the tree top nest together now. The little kit is learning the ropes and seeing that big world out there behind the Backyard. Ordinarily you would call a raccoon home a den and they no doubt now have a new den on the ground deep in the jungle, but their first home was a nest in a treetop much like a bird.
