Eastern and Western Palm Warblers breed in the boreal forests of Canada and winter in the Florida Backyard. The most notable feature of this delightful bird is their near constant tailing wagging. Lots of birds have a habit of pumping or wagging their tails besides the Palm Warblers - like phoebes, wagtails and pipits, and Spotted Sandpipers. In some cases it is thought that tail pumping is a signal meant to send a message to tell a predator that the bird has seen it, and therefore is not worth pursuing.

Raccoon Versus Possum - Lesson Learned
Opossums are generally docile creatures that go about their business with minimal fuss - unless backed into a corner. A raccoon kit out with mom is about to learn a valuable lesson!

Chipmunk Versus Pile of Acorns
Three Acorns at once - Yes it can be done! I put out a pile of about 30 freshly fallen acorns and a few buckeyes and hickory nuts for my favorite Chipmunk to store for winter. It was a big task for the little thing, but like all squirrels their work ethic and desire to prepare for the fast-approaching Winter means the nuts didn't have a chance. Some of the acorn movement was not included as the low sun angle caused the sun to shine right into the camera spoiling the video.

Little Squirrel Versus 83 Big Green Walnuts
Red Squirrel takes on a pile of 83 raw green Walnuts! Did you know that walnuts are wrapped in a thick green husk up to hard ball sized. Most of these walnuts weigh almost as much as the red squirrels who have amazing strength. Squirrels first process the walnuts by removing the green skins or "husking" them with their teeth and storing the hard nuts which will improve with some age. They will come in handy in the middle of a long cold winter!

Wild Feral Cat Courtship
Rare look at wild feral cat territory and courtship interactions. These are true feral cats, descended from feral cats. Their behavior is not necessarily typical of habituated animals feeding around houses and people. This is their world.

Cooper's Hawk Behavior Closeup
Cooper's Hawk returns to the mountain spring for a long bath. I never get tired of watching this magnificent bird. Oddly the raptor has not been observed hunting other birds at the bathing spot even though I have cameras 24/7.

Northern Cardinal Chip Chip or Chipping Call
The sound of Chip Chip Chip - You always know when Northern Cardinals are around because of their classic metallic sounding chip chip calls while approaching a feeder or feeding. I've got the high forest feeders out again this fall and the cardinals tend to visit this feeder alone and are often the last visitors of the day even after sunset.

Squirrel Succumbs to a Single Bot Fly Parasite
Viewer discretion advised. A gray squirrel started acting strange late in the day with no obvious signs of injury or illness. After capturing him at dusk it in a weakened state I found a single botfly under his chin along his throat. He was seemingly improving immediately after removal, but soon succumbed. Mosquito-born bot fly larvae development is not that common in the cooler high elevations of the Smoky Mountains, but mosquitoes have been more common in recent years.

Chipmunk Chokes Stuffing Too Much into Cheeks
Loud choking, but Chipmunk is OK! Chipmunks are infamous for stuffing their cheeks with nuts and seeds especially in Fall as they fill their dens for winter. But can they put so much in their cheeks that they choke – well yes – do they know when to stop – actually no.
It took the chipmunk a minute 45 to fill his cheeks the first time and 2 minutes to run to its den drop off the load and return so now the chipmunk is going for the Guinness record - a 3 minute cheek pouch load and choking is not going to stop him from the goal.
