Downy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Male Downy Woodpecker quickly working an Oak tree - they don't hold still for long! The smallest North American Woodpecker is a precious little bird and just the day before the largest North American Woodpecker was in the Backyard - see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLbwL... after Hurricane Irma the Woodpeckers in general seem to be much more active.

White Breasted Nuthatch and Downy Woodpecker Feeding Techniques
![]() |
White Breasted Nuthatch and Downy Woodpecker Feeding Techniques Video: White Breasted Nuthatch and Downy Woodpecker Feeding Techniques |
Nice example of the foraging differences between Downy Woodpeckers and White Breasted Nuthatches filmed at the same time. The Downy Woodpecker works the heavily barked Black Cherry Tree head-up using its stiff tail for a brace. The White Breasted Nuthatch works the bark head-down relying not on its tail for support - (obviously as it is upside down) - but rather its strong grip on the bark. The Nuthatch has a different perspective and easier access to bugs that the woodpecker might miss. In this case I have smeared suet into the deep bark and the Nuthatch then proceeds to land on the camera and wipe its greasy beak on it. Two great birds often seen together in hardwood forest.

Downy Woodpecker
Male Downy Woodpecker gets first dibs on fresh block of suet. This handsome fellow may be one of the fledglings from earlier in the summer. Downy Woodpeckers will come to suet feeders all summer - just have to put them away at night if you live in bear country or the Raccoons zero in on the suet..

Downy Woodpecker and Gray Catbird
Male Downy Woodpecker has to put up with a Catbird and a Robin who simply don't understand suet feeder etiquette nor the fact that this is a woodpecker blend made for attracting woodpeckers. The little Downy's get their share, but Catbirds and Robins have no shame when it comes to suet!
The female Downy faced the same stiff competition earlier at:

Downy Woodpecker versus Catbird at Suet Feeder
Female Downy Woodpecker and Gray Catbird - can they live in peace and harmony sharing a small suet feeder? Inquiring minds want to know - and will someone get the little Downy Woodpecker a napkin!

Downy Woodpecker Father Feeding Fledgling - Happy Father's Day!
Downy Woodpecker Father is feeding a very noisy fledgling at the suet feeder the day before Fathers' Day. Newly fledged Downy's often have red feathers on the top of their head which gradually go away as they reach maturity. Adult male Downy's have just a small patch of red. The dark band across the back of the fledglings head probably indicates it is a female. The continuous chattering will draw ones attention to the feeder. The quality of this video is a little disappointing as I filmed it through a screen, but the interactions are enjoyable nevertheless. And the calls of a young Downy are priceless!

Downy Woodpecker Calling and Drumming for Mate
Male Downy Woodpecker Calling and Drumming for Mate - my best encounter yet with these elusive little woodpeckers. This perch has been used by generations of Downy's to call and drum from, but this time I had the camera ready! This male has picked this high perch with just the right wood to amplify his drumming - he is defending his breeding territory and courting a female.

Downy Woodpecker Eating Loquats
Male Downy Woodpecker enjoys some ripe Loquats - a bird that doesn't sit still much - its always on the move working the trees. Heard more than seen around these parts, especially outside of breeding season. The Loquats are a pretty evergreen tree and a bit messy, but one can't deny their appeal to birds! A nice Downy Woodpecker call can be heard at:

Free Downy Woodpecker Call Ringtone - Subscriber Appreciation!
Free Quality Downy Woodpecker Ringtone Download for YouTube Subscribers and Blog Readers!
Free Downy Woodpecker Call Ringtone for your phone. I will try and have a new and interesting nature ringtone at least every other month for Blog readers and viewers of the companion Backyard Birding...and Beyond YouTube Channel.
Here is the Link to the free Downy Woodpecker Ringtone. On a desktop PC it will take you to a Google Drive page with the name "Downy_Woodpecker_Call.mp3" in the upper left of the page with a download arrow and there will be a "download" button in the upper middle . The download address will have a coded URL, but will be put in your download directory with the name: "Downy_Woodpecker_Call.mp3". However, on some smart phones you'll only see the download button in the middle of the page and the coded file-name may be put in your download directory and look like a bunch of numbers and letters - this is not a problem - simply rename it to "downy woodpecker" for example - it just takes one extra step.
You can download it to your desktop PC and transfer to your phone's ringtone directory via USB connection or download it directly to your phone. I will not provide technical support as there are many devices out there. On my Droid I simply downloaded it and it is stored in the download directory and then I copied it to the ringtone directory and selected it as a ringtone. I also copied it to the alarm and notification directories as it would be great for these as well. Most devices are similar. Good luck. Thanks for watching and reading and enjoy your new ringtone!

Male Downy Woodpecker Visits the Backyard
Male Downy Woodpecker on a Chinese Tallow Tree
Filmed a male Downy Woodpecker on February 24th in the backyard on a Chinese Tallow Tree. A long-range 800 mm hand held video of the littlest of woodpeckers that rarely stands still. Always a tough bird to capture on video. Back on January 25th I filmed a female Downy Woodpecker on the same tree:
They are likely mates and I have been hearing a lot of Downy calls the past few days in the dense foliage of the Oak and Loquat trees. In fact, the woodpeckers have been feasting on the ripening Loquat fruit. With any luck they will build a nest nearby this spring. This is the first year I can remember the Downy's being so active. The warm winter weather has brought a bumper crop of late winter fruit - that will keep them and many of the other fruit eaters hanging out in the backyard.

Downy Woodpecker Visits the Backyard
Video of Female Downy Woodpecker Working a Chinese Tallow Tree
We remain on alert for the beginning of Screech Owl season, but in the meantime birding has been fairly active in the backyard. Had a chance to shoot some extended video of the smallest of woodpeckers, the Downy Woodpecker. The female is little bigger than sparrow size, moves quickly and is difficult to spot in the trees. She is all black and white and often overlooked. It is rare to get a good shot of them in their wild habitat away from feeders as they will visit suet feeders. This is a long range video at 800 mm. They have a unique and cute call that rarely last more than seconds. I managed to get two calls on the video. The male Downy has a very small amount of red on the back of its head.
