Painted Buntings - Most Colorful Songbird Close-Up

Mature male Painted Buntings are known as the most colorful songbirds in North America - even rivaling the gaudiest of South American and tropical birds! This male has been hanging out in the Backyard in recent days. He is one of the most stunning I've ever seen and here he gives a rare extreme close-up. In fact, he gets so close to the lens he goes out of focus a bit, but if you've ever seen a Painted Bunting you'll never forget! Note that the dark tangle of dense scrub along a fence border is classic Bunting winter habitat and the dead foliage makes him stand out in stark contrast in mid-Winter.

Blue Jays Picky Eaters

Blue Jays are such characters! The first two Jays reject over 40 sunflower seeds and leave with one each while the next two just start pounding them down into their crop without a thought. BTW notice the unusual deference paid to the first Jay while he is meticulously picking through the seeds making the others wait.

Squirrel Party - National Squirrel Appreciation Day

Squirrel Party - National Squirrel Appreciation Day

Join the Squirrel Appreciation Day Party in the Backyard this morning. All are welcome, even the Blue Jays stopped by to celebrate. Eight squirrels showed up and I think that is the whole Backyard population - rarely have I seen more than that at one time except when the new kits come out. Once the population reaches around 8 some have to move on and expand to another territory.

Frustrated Red Squirrel Smashes Thumb - Reacts Just Like Human - National Squirrel Appreciation Day

Frustrated  Red Squirrel Smashes Thumb - Reacts Just Like Human

Red Squirrel smashes its little fingers trying to get peanuts out of a feeder and lets fly some bad squirrel language in frustrating and then sucks his thumb just like we do. Poor little guy, he's too little to open the box so I immediately removed the cover. Squirrels wear their feelings on their sleeves, you always know where you stand with them. January 21st is National Squirrel Appreciation Day - celebrate by feeding some squirrels!

National Squirrel Appreciation Day - Squirrel Clown Box

Squirrel Clown Box

How many Red Squirrels can fit in this Box? You've heard of a "Clown Car" - this is a box full of cute little baby Red Squirrel clowns and their Mom - who is totally frazzled. This goes on for an hour. I'll leave it to the audience to count them! BTW January 21st is National Squirrel Appreciation Day - what better way to see how much joy squirrels can bring!

Squirrel Appreciation Day is a holiday which is celebrated on January 21st every year to celebrate and honor squirrels and the contribution they make to the environment. On this day, people are encouraged to head out into the woods or at least, to their local park to look for their favorite types of squirrels and to leave seeds and nuts out for these tree-dwelling rodents. History of Squirrel Appreciation Day Squirrel Appreciation Day was created by North Carolina rehabilitator in 2001 to acknowledge the contribution that squirrels make to nature. After all, it is estimated that over a billion oak trees are planted by squirrels worldwide when they bury acorns to eat later and then forget where they have buried them – leaving them to sprout. Facts About Squirrels The front four teeth of squirrels grow about 6 inches a year. It’s only the squirrel’s constant gnawing that keeps them under control. A group of squirrels is called a scurry. There are 265 squirrel species all over the world. There are 44 species of flying squirrels. Wild squirrels will eat out of a human’s hand. Grey squirrels will build nests called dreys, high up in trees. Backyard Squirrel Feeding Tips Below are a few tips for those looking to make their backyard more squirrel friendly: Many people leave out a birdbath filled with water for squirrels in the backyard because squirrels are always in need of a clean source of water. Many people will also leave out a variety of nuts for the squirrels in their backyard. These nuts include acorns and hazelnuts. Some people also plant a variety of trees and shrubs to give squirrels in their backyard the cover and food sources they need. Some of these trees and shrubs include oaks, pines, hazelnut bushes and smooth sumac trees.

Hand Feeder Cam for Blue Jays and Squirrels

HandCam experiment for feeding Blue Jays and Squirrels by hand is fun, but a work in progress. It will take even the squirrels a bit of time to adapt to it. A few of the Blue Jays got with the program immediately, but most are a little stand-offish. More to come!

Grackles Up-Close in 4K UHD

Grackles Up-Close in 4K UHD

The Common Grackle is a gorgeous bird that is best appreciated up close like another bird would experience it. On this cloudy day it has a strangely intimidating look to it - like a moving black featureless hole in the world with eyes. When viewed face on in UHD it displays a total lack of color except for those yellow eyes with black pupils and can almost seem to disappear into the background. In sunlight it can appear iridescent with colors changing depending on the angle of sunlight striking it.

Io Moth Caterpillar

Io Moth Caterpillar

The Io Moth Caterpillar is the final larval stage of the magnificent Io Moth with the huge eye spots on its wings. The attractive Io moth caterpillar is also well-known because of its painful sting. Look and appreciate, but don't touch - some people can have a really bad reaction to handling or contacting these and other prickly caterpillars like the Tussock Moth that has been featured on this channel many times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGpA8...
Full-grown (usually fifth instar) larvae are approximately 60 mm (about 2⅜ in.) in length . They are green with a lateral abdominal white stripe edged on the top and bottom with red stripes. Both thoracic legs and abdominal prolegs are reddish, and there are ventro-lateral reddish patches on the abdominal segments. The body is virtually surrounded with scoli bearing black-tipped venomous spines.

Flock of Blue Jays in 4K UHD

Flock of Blue Jays in 4K UHD

A flock or "Band" of Blue Jays feeds in one minute with surprising precision - all in 4K UHD - enjoy! I've taken the action to the Jays territory so you can see how they queue up and get more incoming flight action.

I love the jay that comes in for the last peanut at the 0:55 mark from high on the branch to a perfect landing on the edge of the plank- amazing birds! Note the squirrel that appears out of the woods at 1:39 I think this is the one from the other territory and I'm thinking this particular area of the fence with feeder is where squirrel territories overlap.

A Gray Squirrel comes out of the woods and sees his image reflected in the camera lens for the first time. He finds himself quite fascinating!
Sadly this camera has now mysteriously gone missing - the usual suspects come to mind. Could be interesting if I ever find it.

Seventeen Blue Jays Have Breakfast

Seventeen Blue Jays Have Breakfast

17 Blue Jays enjoy peanuts for breakfast in the Backyard and then come back for seconds and thirds! The recent brutal cold weather (actually 32 degrees this AM) has lead to a record number of hungry Jays. They proceed in an orderly fashion for the most part, it takes less than two minutes for the 17 peanuts to disappear.

Gray Catbirds Vacationing in Florida for Winter!

Gray Catbirds Vacationing in Florida for Winter!

About a dozen more Gray Catbirds arrived on January 1st and are just having a ball in the birdbaths! Fun, gregarious and water-loving they have joined their few resident cousins and like any visitor to a Florida relatives house in winter the first thing they have to do is jump in the pool! They never stray far from the dense brush right behind the Backyard where they can disappear into the scenery and only be known by their cat-like meowing call. Guest appearances by the usual suspects. Watch for a rare appearance by a Mockingbird and Brown Thrasher with the catbirds making up all of the bird family Mimidae, the "Mimics" known for their singing prowess. Also watch for a Painted Bunting and bathing Catbird in the same frame as a Blue Jay eating at the window feeder. Enjoy!

Merced and San Luis National Wildlife Refuges California - Birds, Wildlife and Relaxing Music

Merced and San Luis National Wildlife Refuge California

A relaxing tour of some of the birds and animals at the San Luis National Wildlife Complex along the San Joaquin River west of Merced, California.
The Refuge is host to significant assemblages of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and plants; some of which, such as the California tiger salamander, the long-horned fairy shrimp, and San Joaquin kit fox, are endangered species. The Complex contains all the representative habitats found in the northern San Joaquin Valley. All of the refuge units are located adjacent to the San Joaquin River and its tributaries, and habitats are highly variable, ranging from hydric (or wet) conditions to xeric (or dry) conditions. The Complex and neighboring lands feature the largest network of freshwater wetlands remaining in California.
Other units in the San Luis NWR Complex include the Merced NWR, San Joaquin River NWR, and Grasslands Wildlife Management Area.
