Rare natural extended quality time with a male Downy Woodpecker in Backyard North, one of the smallest woodpecker, it is a scaled- down version of other woodpeckers. Here we see it working the bark of a locust tree and then taking a break for some preening. Its nice to see this bird in a natural setting away from feeders.

Here is some nice footage of the three owlets at the time the feed ended on May 9th. I had to go on a trip and left the live feed running so you and I could watch as well from afar , but the PC got hung up as I was not there to babysit it. Next year I'll consider putting the feed up to the cloud so it is not dependent on software and connection to a PC. In any case, the owlets and parents were very efficient and very healthy this season, but quite a bit late getting started. I suspect after their great success this year they will return earlier to the new box. Just before I left the woodpeckers were starting to lay eggs in the nest box so hope to have an update on them in early June. The owlets have no doubt fledged now and all should be well. Thanks to all who watched.

Mother Owl is dropping lizards into the box last night to see if the owlets are ready to eat them all by themselves. The largest owlet is already stuffed and could handle it, but the smallest and the middle owlet take turns trying to eat the lizard with little luck - Mom came back and chewed it up for them - the humility....... Dracula Owl really just wants to be left all alone. Sometimes called transformer, shape-shifting or Dracula act the tiny Eastern Screech Owls of the Backyard are one of the very few small owl species that regularly do this "Concealing Postures" or the German word "Tarnstellung" to survive in a very hostile world. This is mother owl taking a break from the owlets in the nest box in a nearby tree and when observed or threatened they change their shape to be as narrow as possible and mimic a tree branch. This is why Screech Owls are so hard to spot in trees.

Dad visits Mom and the 3 owlets for a little quality time! Subscribe for the latest videos and updates! The three owlets are growing fast! Mother will stay in the nest box all day and soon will start perching above as the owlets grow fast and it starts to get crowded - then we will see the owlets most of the time. Father Red Morph Screech Owl perches in a nearby mango tree all day and then brings food during the night. When the owlets get bigger mother will spend more time out of the nest box at night and also hunt and bring food. This is a new owl house and HD camera in a new location that is shaded all day long so the owls don't suffer so much from the heat.
