Bat In The Patio Umbrella

A Tri-Colored or Eastern Pipistrelle Bat (Perimyotis subflavus) roosting in the patio umbrella offers a close-up view of this seldom seen and fascinating creature. This bat is very small with a body not even two inches long and is actually quite cute. Bats are very beneficial eating mosquitoes that carry disease. These bats are so small they can easily hide in the jungle behind the Backyard under palm fronds and large leafs behind loose tree bark or in moss clumps and small cavities in trees. Interesting that they seem to have a preference for closed umbrellas. More info at: https://www.floridabats.org/tricolore...

Cottontail Rabbit Camouflage

Example of how hard it is to see an Appalachian Cottontail Rabbit in seasonal winter grass in their typical feeding environment. Also illustrates the benefits of not mowing your lawn but letting it turn into a meadow - see: https://youtu.be/oegaQMyQuXs

Amazing Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

The pretty white flowers of the Bloodroot plant cover the high forest floor in early spring. Usually one of the first wildflowers to appear and very distinctive. But the pretty white flower belies what lies underneath - the bright blood red root sap. Easy to find in moist eastern forests bloodroot has long been touted as having various medicinal properties - as a cure for skin cancer and even used in toothpaste. But the raw blood red root juice is a potent and dangerous substance best not messed with. See: https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ing... regarding use and side effects of prepared bloodroot products. From an amateur Naturalist perspective it is a very fascinating wildflower all the better appreciated when you know a little more about it. Filmed in the Great Smoky Mountains (not in the park) in early April 2018 on a cold and windy day at 4,500 feet elevation.

Flycatchers Try To Evict Screech Owl From Nest Box

The Great Crested Flycatchers are resorting to verbal harassment to try and get Mother Screech Owl out of the prime nest box housing so they can lay their eggs. Of course, Mother Owl is having none of it! There are other nest boxes available, but traditionally the Flycatchers have used this nest box, but momma owl is running behind schedule. I suspect like in some years past the flycatchers will wait a little longer until the owls leave and then claim this box.

Mother Screech Owl and Child - Strong Bond

Mother Eastern Screech Owl and her only surviving child or "owlet" have a special bond spending all that time alone together in the nest box. It is such a different dynamic than the hectic times when there are 3 or 4 owlets like usual. I think the owlet is a female which is good since the other eggs were not viable - ensuring another generation. Very easy for the parents to give her lots of food so she is growing fast and should be gone within a week.
Hopefully the failure of the other eggs to hatch is not a trend developing, they owls have been amazingly successful over the years.

Great Crested Flycatchers Calling - Close and Loud

It's Flycatcher time! A breeding pair of Great Crested Flycatchers are back looking for a nest box in the Backyard. These are loud outgoing birds - they are quiet and secretive all year until breeding time. Problem is Mother Screech Owl is running behind schedule, the flycatchers usually claim the empty owl nest box in April after the owls are done. The owls should be done in about a week so they may wait on her or they may take the flycatcher box I got for them on the house wall. But my experience has been they prefer the owl box, fortunately they have no sense of smell.

Father Screech Owl Catches Giant Sphinx Moth

Father Eastern Screech Owl is catching an interesting assortment of creatures to feed the only surviving owlet. I didn't know we had moths this big in the Backyard - I thought it was a bird when I first saw it hanging from his claws. I believe it is a variety of giant Sphinx Moth - it must have a wingspan of 4 to 5 inches. In any case the owlet is eating good! Filmed with a Bushnell Trophy Cam trail camera available on Amazon at: https://amzn.to/2HiChtq

Florida Screech Owl House Live - The "Only Owlet"

Live from the Florida Screech Owl House - Mother and Father Owl and their precious only surviving Owlet! Mother Screech Owl is in the nest box with her only surviving offspring this year. For some reason two of the eggs did not hatch. Because it is an only owlet it has grown rapidly in 20 days and should be leaving "fledging" the nest box between April 27 and 30.

Screech Owl Catches Large Invasive Lizards

The Male Eastern Screech Owl has been catching very large lizards to feed the only surviving owlet! No wonder she's so big already! I'm not sure, but I think these lizards are Giant Amevia introduced by the pet trade and released or escaped into the wild. No native Florida lizard grows this long. Giant Amevia are native to Central and South America. These alert, active lizards are also called green whiptails or Jungle Runners in the pet trade. The long whip like tail makes up nearly 2/3 of this lizards total length as you can see.

Screech Owl Babies Update - The "Only Owlet"

Mother Screech Owl is in the nest box with her only surviving offspring this year. For some reason two of the eggs did not hatch. I have been gone for two weeks and expected to find 3 owlets when I returned today. First time this has happened. In this clip you will see and hear mother and owlet bonding. This was taken in late morning when it gets a bit hot in this particular nest box. She did not select the one they used last year. Because it is an only owlet it has grown rapidly in 20 days and should be leaving within the next 7-10 days. I plan to start a live broadcast later this afternoon -stay tuned. Song Bird Dawn Chorus - A Bird Symphony!

The Backyard Bird Spring Dawn Chorus is at peak intensity now in the Great Smoky Mountains! One of Nature's most amazing aural spectacles! Just relax and listen. If you have never heard it before you are in for a treat. It starts when it is still too dark to video and reaches its crescendo just before sunrise. Spring is the best time to hear it as the males are defending territory and attracting mates. You may hear some songs and calls you may never have heard before especially between about 5:00 to 7:00 it sounds like a human whistling.

Rime Ice Covers Great Smoky Mountains

Beautiful Rim Ice coats the trees above 4000 feet in the Great Smoky Mountains. Despite the cold morning birds are out and singing away - it is Spring after all! Not that unusual for early April at higher elevations. If you want to hear thunder over the mountains check out: https://youtu.be/gotITQwC4Mg During the cold months, you will often see white on mountaintops or up just one side of a mountain. You may think it's snow, but it is often rime ice formed when water droplets in clouds or fog freeze to the trees. Often, the rime ice forms just on the windward (wind-facing) slope of the mountain as clouds sweep over the ridge.

CamPark 14MP Trail Camera Test - High Quality Low Price Wildlife Security CAM

A High-quality and low-price motion detection wildlife camera anyone can use in their Backyard. I give the Campark 14MP trail camera a comprehensive test and am impressed with what I can accomplish with it to document Backyard wildlife from tiny Chickadees to giant Elk day and night.
Available on Amazon https://amzn.to/2JOktnu for a new low price of $61.99 down from $79 as of 4/15/18.
You can do this to. I will follow up with more videos and some more detailed tutorials about how to capture good closeup photos and videos of birds and small mammals in your Backyard in the future. Go Pros and similar action cams have superior quality, however they can only run a few hours - motion detection trail cams can be left in place for months, hours or days to document the action from wildlife to security concerns etc. Regular viewers of this channel know I have made dozens of fun trail camera videos over the years, but this is a new breakthrough at this price point for the features and image quality.
This camera was provided by the manufacturer for testing - all the opinions are my own.

Hand Feeding Blue Jays - Nesting Behavioral Changes

The gregarious Band of 18 or so Backyard Blue Jays has broken up into breeding pairs and building nests now and their behavior has changed noticeably. They are more cautious and reluctant to feed out of my hand and stick close to the heavy brush where there nests are hidden. See: https://youtu.be/eqs7vTrobfU Blue Jays are very secretive about their nests and build them in near inaccessible tangles of heavy brush so I have never seen one and rightly so for survival their trust of humans is less than at other times of the year. Once the kids fledge they bring them out to meet me. See for example: https://youtu.be/upbO35M36CA

Garter Snake Coiled and Flicking Tongue

Garter Snake likely just emerged from its hibernation den and is trying to warm up in the sun. They coiled up and put on a threatening show when accidentally surprised, but they are very beneficial and harmless snakes and should just be left alone. This one probably thinks its act worked, unfortunately too many people kill helpless snakes when they come across them.

World's Laziest Raccoon

Rigby the Raccoon avoids work at all costs, especially now that he found a hiding spot in the crown of a Backyard Palmetto Tree. He's too lazy and mellow to even want to play. After dark he'll get up and move around a bit maybe eat some fresh ripe loquats and check out the neighbors trash. A tip: If you are ever walking in the woods and looking for bears or raccoons - look up in the trees it makes sense this is their favorite safe place to chill out. Can I really claim our Rigby Raccoon is the World's biggest slacker Raccoon - we'll he is certainly in the running and his expression says it all....
