How to Find Owls - Mother and Father Screech Owl

A tried and true birding hack lead me to find mother screech owl's hiding place in the giant oak tree next to the next box - owl white wash! Also a discussion of mother owl's location preferences for safety next to the nest boxes. The male owl shows a variety of nesting sites that the female tries out and ultimately makes the call. Boat Tailed Grackle Courtship Displays

Male Boat Tailed Grackles is a handsome bird - out on the vast Florida marshland calling, flashing its white nicating eye membranes, and making noise with tail feathers from a prominent spot to attract attention to himself and his territory. These are fascinating birds and generally not the Grackles you see around urban human centers, those are usually common grackles. Cottontail Rabbit Kitten Meditation

Appalachian Cottontail Rabbit kitten just out of the nest and not much bigger than an oak leaf is relaxing in Backyard North. Almost impossible to see except the Black Rabbit was near it and ran off. Enjoy the perfection of this little creature. Before I get complaints there is about a minute of introduction and the rest is pure rabbit! Wild Black Melanistic Rabbit Mini Documentary

A melanistic wild black rabbit was in Backyard North when I returned in mid-April and has been here since last fall. There is little information to be found on Google and although its known wild rabbit melanism can occur this may be a released domestic rabbit that is now surviving as feral. Why would someone do that - same irresponsible people who dump cats perhaps?? In any case, this rabbit made it through winter in great shape and is thriving and acting just like the Cottontails and appears with the springs first batch of 3 normally brown rabbit kittens. I'll update you as I document this rabbit's situation further. Filmed with Canon SX70HS on Amazon at: https://amzn.to/2QftDPd Commision Earned 🔴 New HD videos uploaded weekly. Black Racer Snake Documentary - The Importance of Blue Jays

A rare extended encounter with a big Black Racer Snake on the hunt for food or love in the Backyard shaking its tail like a rattlesnake and striking. It is unusual to observe one for so long and also hear how important Blue Jays can be to alerting Backyard wildlife to the presence of predators - they are especially bothered by snakes which can climb trees and even walls to eat bird eggs and chicks and also mammal babies. The snakes are also on the menu for the bigger hawks that frequent the Backyard and although hawks occasionally take birds at feeders in the long run the balance of reduced snake predation is favorable for Backyard wildlife. Mother Screech Owl Protects Owlets from Blue Jay Attack

Mother owl is guarding the nest box in a tree branch nearby so when a Blue Jay plans to enter the nest box she is quick to react and head it off. Adult Blue Jays which are much bigger and tougher than screech owlets will take baby birds that are left unattended, but mother owl wont let that happen are her watch. Of course owls will take Blue Jay nestlings as well so its all part of Nature. These Screech Owls have not taken any birds for food this season as there is an abundance of lizards, small snakes and rats and mice. The live feed is getting wilder each day and continues at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYDSQ...

Father Screech Owl Guarding Owlets in Nest Box

I finally found Father Red Morph Screech Owl in the oak tree overlooking the nest box. He has moved in closer now that they the owlets are big and Mother is out of the box. Live feed continues at: https://youtu.be/vYDSQr_nnf4 The owlets should be leaving soon and it is Fathers job to provide food and guard the box. I just found mother owl's hiding spot and will show you that in the next video. Filmed with Canon SX70HS on Amazon at: https://amzn.to/2QftDPd Commision Earned 🔴 New HD videos uploaded weekly. Yellowthroat Warbler Song

The Bandit! In my quest to introduce you to new birds, I bring you the sounds of a male Common Yellowthroat singing his heart out on the Florida prairie. Not to be confused with the Yellow-throated Warbler see: https://youtu.be/XU7nUzVMp8g the Yellowthroat is actually more noteworthy for the black mask like band across the eyes. Anything but "common", this handsome warbler is not rare, but elusive to see and film as it flits among the brush and tall grasses, but breeding season brings them out in the open to strut their stuff.
A broad black mask lends a touch of highwayman’s mystique to the male Common Yellowthroat. Look for these furtive, yellow-and-olive warblers skulking through tangled vegetation, often at the edges of marshes and wetlands. Females lack the mask and are much browner, though they usually show a hint of warm yellow at the throat. Yellowthroats are vocal birds, and both their witchety-witchety-witchety songs and distinctive call notes help reveal the presence of this, one of our most numerous warblers.

The Painted Buntings are heading north soon. I'm Trying something new - a real-time limited edited discussion of what is going on as I interact with the Backyard creatures. Natural Spring Birdbath - The Narrated Documentary

This is the narrated documentary version of the Natural Spring "Bird Bath Movie" https://youtu.be/MM4duaFzE88 with a little different editing, narrated information about the birds and wildlife and a story arc. This film covers two months of birds bathing at a mountain spring in the Great Smoky Mountains from late Summer into Autumn as the leaves fall and temperature drop. It is meant to be an immersive and educational meditative ambient or atmospheric experience to enjoy Nature and relax to the sights and sounds of birds and a bubbling spring and learn a bit about the different birds that visit the wild spring. Marsh Rabbit Documentary - An Unusual Bunny!

Marsh Rabbits and Cottontail Rabbits both live in the Florida Backyard. But the elusive Marsh Rabbit is a rare small bunny that walks on all fours like a cat - has short little legs and ears and a small dark tail and rarely hops around. It has special feet and legs adapted for life in dense wet vegetation and is an excellent swimmer. Fogbow, White Rainbow or Ghost Rainbow - Mini Documentary

Lucky encounter with a "Fogbow" while searching for birds out on the vast Florida grasslands – sometimes called white rainbows, cloudbows or ghost rainbows. Soundtrack by meadowlarks! Fogbows are made much as rainbows are, from the same configuration of sunlight and moisture. Rainbows happen when the air is filled with raindrops, and you always see a rainbow in the direction opposite the sun. Fogbows are much the same, always opposite the sun, but fogbows are caused by the small droplets inside a fog or cloud rather than larger raindrops. Because the water droplets in fog are so small, fogbows have only weak colors or are colorless. Look for fogbows in a thin fog when the sun is bright. You might see one when the sun breaks through a fog. From: https://earthsky.org/earth/what-is-a-... Crow Friend Visits Me - Corvid Intelligence

I have developed a rewarding relationship with a family of fish crows over the past few years. They mostly eat small amounts of high end soft cat kibble or chopped up soft boiled eggs to supplement their natural diet (rarely bread as in this case although they like it and show what to do with it). Like the Blue Jays, make great Backyard avian citizens. They make fantastic avian friends. Hawks, snakes, cats and other predators are always warned for or scared or harassed away, protecting the other backyard birds and squirrels.
