A melanistic wild black rabbit was in Backyard North when I returned in mid-April and has been here since last fall. There is little information to be found on Google and although its known wild rabbit melanism can occur this may be a released domestic rabbit that is now surviving as feral. Why would someone do that - same irresponsible people who dump cats perhaps?? In any case, this rabbit made it through winter in great shape and is thriving and acting just like the Cottontails and appears with the springs first batch of 3 normally brown rabbit kittens. I'll update you as I document this rabbit's situation further.
