A rare extended encounter with a big Black Racer Snake on the hunt for food or love in the Backyard shaking its tail like a rattlesnake and striking. It is unusual to observe one for so long and also hear how important Blue Jays can be to alerting Backyard wildlife to the presence of predators - they are especially bothered by snakes which can climb trees and even walls to eat bird eggs and chicks and also mammal babies. The snakes are also on the menu for the bigger hawks that frequent the Backyard and although hawks occasionally take birds at feeders in the long run the balance of reduced snake predation is favorable for Backyard wildlife.
