Drive Through Bird Bath

A small spring deep in the woods behind the Mountain Backyard is like a drive through car wash for Mourning Doves. Birds love water and will seek it out and enjoy it so if you want to attract birds to your yard a bird bath or better yet a shallow water feature with moving water will always be a big hit as long as it is near some cover like trees or bushes for safety.

Feeding Red Bellied Woodpecker Babies

The 3 remaining Red Bellied Woodpecker chicks fledged and are doing well and now are dispersing into the woods. This video shows father Woody passing food to Mother who then dispenses it to the 4 chicks. As you can see the one chick that didn't survive was looking weak and not fighting for food much at this point and passed away a few days later. Mother removed the body in this video: https://youtu.be/Y46-6kmjCsw

Hand Feeding Wild Chipmunks Part 2

Part 2 of the Hand Feeding Chipmunks Challenge. The three young Chipmunks have distinct personalities and styles, but I've got all of them eating seeds out my hand. Soon they will likely disperse out into the larger forest to find their own territories as they are generally solitary except in the breeding seasons. Part one which has tips on how to befriend these little creatures is at: https://youtu.be/Dako5MmOIhs

How Squirrels Keep Cool In Summer

Squirrels get hot just like humans and have to take a break and cool down. This is my current favorite squirrel model (the one with what looks like a bite out of its ear) and he's getting hot and bothered during a test shooting of a new tripod and finally gets tired of waiting and leaves the set and of course I give him and his friend a peanut for their trouble. They like to spread out to maximize body contact with cooler moist wood that hasn't been heated by the direct sun yet and doing a little saliva bath on their forearms to help dissipate heat.

Bird Sunbathing Behavior

Have you ever seen songbirds like this American Robin or Brown Thrasher sitting awkwardly in the yard looking like they are sick or injured in a trance-like state? Well they are actually sunbathing to help their feather hygiene and general health. Often they like to do this after a nice bath. The leaning to one side and open beaks to suck in air to puff themselves up gives maximum sun exposure to one side and often they will switch to another side. After a number of minutes in the hot sun they will awaken out of their bliss and usually move to the shade and preen their feathers to remove any dead parasites etc and spread out protective oils on their feathers. Birds love water and a safe place to sunbath and preen as they are vulnerable to attacks by predators like cats when they do this - so give them their safe space and some water.

Test of Sirui T 024 Series Light Carbon Fiber Tripod with VA 5 Ultra Com...

Test of Sirui T 024 Series Light Carbon Fiber Tripod with VA 5 Fluid Head

My Squirrel, Blue Jay and Crow friends have fun testing and reviewing the Sirui lighweight carbon fiber travel tripod and ultra compact Video Head in Florida and the NC Mountains. Provided by the manufacturer to test out, the quality is high and the performance very nice as you'll see. This would be a good setup for superzoom point and shoots like the Canon SX70 and Nikon P1000, but also the newer lightweight mirrorless full frame cameras with lighter telephoto lenses. I test it to the weight limit with a DSLR and big zoom lense.
