Mother Rabbit appears to be dreaming and then wakes from her beauty rest in epic fashion we can all relate to. She is on her favorite dirt patch and it takes her awhile to get up and moving. Life is good!

Rare footage of Mother Appalachian Cottontail Rabbit with her precious babies the evening they left the nest. Filmed with Campark Trail Game Camera on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2LPySUA . This was a fortunate catch as I just left the motion detection camera running beside the nest to see if the kits might come back and they all did. The lucky part is it was just about dark and for this one precious minute the camera was not yet in infrared night mode and we get to see a rare color video of the rabbit family together. Because it is almost dark the image is a bit grainy, but that is the nature of video and photos in natural light. Enjoy!

Oh My! I was lucky to capture all five baby rabbits leaving the nest - the one decided to go back. Also an inspection of the empty nest and just how dangerous their environment really is.

Pine Siskins, Blue Jays, Juncos, Goldfinch, Chickadees and my favorite Tufted Titmice visit all day long in my clear window birdfeeder in the Mountains. Available on Amazon in this best selling version - https://amzn.to/2LRd5bF. I now only use sunflower seeds in them - basically all birds - large and small love sunflower seeds - and there is less mess. Even the Goldfinches are forgoing their beloved thistle socks for sunflower seeds, Probably more meat for the effort. These feeders are great for windows where you spend a lot of time - in my case above my PC's in both Florida and the Mountains. So far they have remained squirrel proof and not for lack of trying - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEjou... for a squirrel that fell trying to get into one.

Mother Rabbits do an amazing job of hiding or camouflaging their nests. They are right there in our yards concealing their precious Rabbit Kittens or Kits! Sometimes you can spot them as spots of bunched up brown grass , but not this one, the camouflage is simply amazing. Mother only visits once a day and covers them up but the rambunctious growing kittens eventually open it up enough to study their world. These precious little ones will be leaving any day now - enjoy while we can!

Southern Flying Squirrels are fascinating nocturnal creatures of the forest. Their big saucer eyes, little pink nose, thick almost arctic like fur and of course their big folds of skin they use like wings to glide from tree to tree. If you watch them closely their most amazing skill is to run both up and down trees at full speed. They move about by climbing high in a tree - glide to another tree - climb to the top and repeat. There is no doubt they are squirrels as you watch their feeding behaviour - give them a pile of sunflower sees on a tree feeder near a security light and enjoy the show! To watch them flying in action check out: https://youtu.be/yYqAhJPF1NI
Southern Flying Squirrel
Glaucomys volans This diminutive rodent with the big saucerlike eyes is probably the most common mammal never seen by humans. It occupies habitat similar to that of the gray squirrel and, to a lesser extent, the fox squirrel, yet because it is a nocturnal species, it is not seen as often as the other two. It is truly arboreal, gliding from tree to tree on folds of outstretched skin.
Description The southern flying squirrel is smaller than its northern cousin and ranks as the smallest of the state’s 5 tree squirrel species, which include the red squirrel, fox squirrel and gray squirrel. It weighs no more than 2 or 3 oz. and measures from 8 1/2 in. to 97/8 in., including a 3- to 4-inch-long tail. Its fur is a lustrous reddish brown or gray, although its belly is counter-colored a creamy white.
This squirrel’s most distinctive feature is the cape of loose skin that stretches from its wrists to its ankles and forms the membrane on which it glides. The membrane is bordered in black. When the squirrel stretches its legs to their fullest extent, the membrane opens and supports the animal on glides of considerable distance.
Flying squirrels produce a birdlike chirping sound. Some of their vocalizations are not audible to the human ear. More info: http://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0/L...

Four baby Appalachian Cottontails in their nest. Big surprise upon returning to the mountains! I was lucky to even spot these precious little things. They are fairly well along so I don't think they will be in this nest for too many days longer so we'll enjoy while we can. More to come on what is turning out to be the summer of the rabbit both north and south.

Momma Cottontail is in the most relaxed rabbit pose as she sunbaths after a nice dust bath and enjoys the cool patch of dry ground as well. This is a special spot in Backyard North in the Great Smoky Mountains traditionally enjoyed by rabbits. How do I know this is momma rabbit, well there is a big surprise in store in the coming days - stay tuned! This is turning out to be the summer of the rabbit both north and south.

This is what a Backyard Talk Show would be like with wild furry animals as guests. They are good listeners at least! Back in Florida lets try and have a conversation with/about the young Marsh Rabbit and deal with the squirrels who insist on being the center of attention.
Young Red Squirrel throws a remarkable barking fit to get his way with food - and I'm his enabler. At least I forced him to up his game. Red Squirrels are remarkable for their boisterous intimidation tactics - we have Gray Squirrels in the mountain forests just like Reds, but there is a reason almost all the videos are of the Red Squirrels - they literally scare the much bigger squirrels away.

Squirrels and Blue Jays see wild baby Marsh Rabbit that has moved into the Backyard and are totally bewildered. What is this alien little creature? A miracle rabbit - how did it survive to get here - I love the little thing its always in the yard now, but its chances for survival are slim and none, but there is always hope, there is enough snakes to keep the hawks occupied and I haven't seen a stray/feral cat in the Florida Backyard for some time. Cross your fingers. In the meantime enjoy the expression on the head squirrels face when it encounters the baby rabbit for the first time.

Mr. House Wren spends a good part of each day calling or "singing" or perhaps yelling to keep anyone away from his House - including me and the squirrels. He is after all a House Wren! Big on attitude and energy and short on patience! If you want to see a house wren putting the hurt on a red squirrel from last year check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjHpD...

Red Squirrel made a crazy jump from the rooftop to the clear bird feeder on the window and fell hard on the ground below. I kept on eye on him. I think he was just winded as they are pretty flexible - like birds that sometime hit glass - they sit still for as long as it takes and usually recover. This one was back doing crazy squirrel stuff a few hours later.

Another stray cat wandered into Backyard north and the resident Eastern Towhees job is to sound a continuous cat call of one whistled note. In Florida this job is done by the Blue Jays, but up in the Great Smoky Mountains the few Blue Jays around keep a low profile and the Towhees are the boss of the yard. That is actually an interesting thing how Blue Jays can act so differently in diverse environments. That somebody would be so irresponsible as to abandon or let a nice cat like this run free up here is unfortunately not surprising. I tried to carefully outflank the cat and get closer and see if I could communicate, but it bolted into the woods. Here is a video of Towhees alarming on a cat last summer https://youtu.be/UJM4lb6KZvQ it appears to be a signature call.

Squirrel versus Owl in a battle of wits - perhaps you can guess how this is going to turn out! Mother Screech Owl has just about had enough of this - note how small screech owls really are and why they try to look big.
This is footage from a damaged external hard drive that was salvaged so as I recover interesting old footage I'll pass it along.
