Man Befriends Chipmunk Upsets Blue Jay

I'm working on making friends with a precocious chipmunk, but my Blue Jay Buddy is having none of it. I find Chipmunks a little harder to relate to than Gray and Red Squirrels and I'm not sure why this one has such a fear of the call of the Blue Jay. This time of year in the mountains they are busy storing away as much food as they can.

Full Harvest Moon Digiscope Video With A SmartPhone

Full Harvest Moon of 9/24/18 gave me a chance to test out the new Spotting scope to digiscope the Moon with my Droid Trubo 2 SmartPhone. With your Smart Phone, free software and a low-cost spotting scope like the WOSPORTS 15x45-60 available at Amazon https://amzn.to/2MZoO7F and provided for me to test you can get pretty remarkable images and video for $53. I could have done much better with a heavy tripod - I was using one of my lightweight ones and the jiggling you see sometimes is actually caused by the pretty stiff wind that was blowing last night.
A review and demo of using the digiscope and phone is at:

Animal Personal Space Violations

Wild Animals have personal space boundaries with each other and humans. The concept is easily demonstrated by these four wild Backyard squirrels, two red squirrels in North Carolina and two Gray Squirrels in Florida - All habituated to me, but each with their unique personalities and reactions. It is important to be aware of personal space with all animals if you want to get along and observe them and generally enjoy Nature more. Personal space violations trigger alert reactions and ultimately fight or flight responses in animals. Violate their space at your peril, respect it and you will be surprised at how your relationships with animals will improve. Especially regarding squirrels unless you raised them from kittens and know them intimately never try to take the initiative to touch or hold them no matter how friendly they may seem, you are now in their intimate space reserved for fellow wild squirrels, their reaction time is so much faster than you can imagine and a simple nip on your finger by them as a warning will result in a mess of a finger. On the other hand, fed and overly spoiled squirrels and most other wild animals such as raccoons and bears will eventually readily invade your own personal space and you'll have an issue of discipline or worse.

What This Abandoned Stray Cat Finally Reveals is Amazing

Wait for it! Experience it like I did in real-time - first impressions can be wrong. What human idiot would abandon such a stunning Tomcat in the jungle/conservation area behind the Florida Backyard. Oh yes he's a Tomcat all right - in all his natural glory!

Stunning Chipmunk Singing Performance

Simply Stunning - a true virtuoso Chipmunk performance! Perfect staging, posture and positioning of head, hands and tail - the performance starts out slow and builds to a dramatic conclusion. If you have listened to other Chipmunk fall performances you will note the subtle variation in this performance, much more song and bird-like than the classic chipping call. Listen carefully at the beginning and you'll hear a competitor start to compete and then give up - there is no competition! A recent performance by another Chipmunk:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZGS5...

Chipmunk Learns Never Turn Your Back On A Blue Jay

Blue Jay versus Chipmunk - after much back and forth a treaty for peaceful coexistence on the feeding platform has been reached between these two intelligent creatures. The Chipmunk and Blue Jay will now share and eat seeds at the same time, but the Chipmunk must never turn its back on the Blue Jay - Unfortunately for us that means a lot of butt shots of the Chipmunk.

Yellow Throated Warbler

Filmed my first Yellow Throated Warbler in the Great Smoky Mountains around 4K feet. A small group of them no doubt passing through as I never see these birds up here on a regular basis. Truly one of the most stunning Warblers they are extremely difficult to film and get in focus as the flit through the tree branches. I left some unedited footage so you can get the idea of how hard they are to track.

Possum Tries to Eat Trail Camera

Did you know Opossums have the most teeth of any mammal - 50 teeth - this is what they look like! They are omnivorous, but cameras usually aren't on the menu. Mother Raccoon and her three kittens also can't resist checking it out the camera, but not eating it - they have standards.

Chipmunk Calling "Chip Chip Chip"

Excellent example of the classic Sound of a Chipmunk calling Chip - Chip - Chip. This is why they are called Chip-Munks. This is very different from their "cluck-cluck" knocking on wood sound heard here: https://youtu.be/QgoTM4RZF7o They get very noisy in late summer and early autumn!
Not sure where the "munk" part comes from, but Wiki says: The common name originally may have been spelled "chitmunk," from the native Odawa (Ottawa) word jidmoonh, meaning "red squirrel" (cf. Ojibwe, ajidamoo).[8][9] The earliest form cited in the Oxford English Dictionary (from 1842) is "chipmonk," however, "chipmunk" appears in several books from the 1820s and 1830s.[10] Other early forms include "chipmuck" and "chipminck," and in the 1830s they were also referred to as "chip squirrels;" probably in reference to the sound they make. In the mid-1800s, John James Audubon and his sons included a lithograph of the chipmunk in their Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, calling it the "chipping squirrel [or] hackee."[11] Chipmunks have also been referred to as "striped squirrels," "timber tigers," and "ground squirrels" (although the name "ground squirrel" usually refers to other squirrels, such as those of the genus Spermophilus).

How This Blue Jay Gets Revenge on Chipmunk Is Hilarious

Don't usually think of Blue Jays as being stealthy, but watch how this one silently sneaks up behind the Chipmunk and nearly gives the little glutton a heart attack! This back and forth had been going on all morning - its like being behind someone in the buffet line and realizing there is not going to be any food left by the time you get there!
Filmed on 9/10/18 with a new Ultra HD Action Camera I'm testing out from the folks at COOAU. I'll do a full review video of this camera soon. A special Backyard 10% discount code ( IIC7WSEM ) available on Amazon at:

Mysterious Wood Knocks in Forest Solved

August 31, 2018. Best example of distant forest Wood Knocks I have captured. This always starts in late August and continues into October. Would you believe Chipmunks make these incredible distant sounds? I solved this mystery a few years ago and it is not what scientists claim.
Cluck - Cluck or Knock - Knock on wood sound or calls echoing loudly through the forests and mountains - these incredible sounds are made by Chipmunks and seeing is believing! After three years of documenting these loud sounds that carry for 100's of yards through the forest and suspecting they were from Chipmunks, but not knowing how they could be so loud I've finally caught the little ones in the act. They put a lot of effort into these calls with full body involvement. This loud calling typically starts in late summer - here in the Great Smoky Mountains it was August 29th. These calls have absolutely nothing to do with a warning call after seeing predators such as hawks as some scientists have concluded in limited studies mostly in the northeast, but likely have everything to do with Chipmunk communication, perhaps territory. These sounds will echo through the forest sometimes for hours with several joining in especially in October. Because Chipmunks are so small and the forest so vast it is very hard to actually find the source of these loud wood-knocking noises, but today I got lucky with one sitting on a pile of rocks at the forest edge - the Chipmunk seemed to enter an almost trance-like state for a few minutes.
Here are the previous recordings in the deep forest - you can imagine how hard it is to find an individual Chipmunk:

White Breasted Nuthatch

White Breasted Nuthatch hunting for food in crevices of tree bark is their natural method of finding food. Very woodpecker-like they mostly feed upside down. This time of year they are getting more active. In the background you can hear a very excitable Titmouse and a Hummingbird and a special surprise at the end!
