Red Breasted Nuthatch captured on film for the first time in Backyard North. They love suet and sunflower seeds. White Breasted Nuthatches which are considerably larger and lack the distinctive eye strip of the Red Breasted Nuthatches are very common here. The Red Breasted Nuthatches which are primarily a northern bird are much rarer to spot. This area of the high southern Appalachians is at the extreme south end of their year-round range although they are known to migrate into the southeast in winter at times. This appears to be a solitary bird.

This stray cat wants to be a raccoon and do raccoon things. You be the judge. The cat would no doubt excel at vertical leaping up and down, but otherwise I'm not so sure. At the end of the video we see the true agility master! Here is a video of the cat waiting patiently for the elder raccoon to finish eating: https://youtu.be/YMPZ1LCjcNA

Never thought I'd see a Red Squirrel do this - they are amazing animal athletes. Its one thing to carry off a block a suet that weighs more than it does, it's quit another to take off with it in a vertical leap to a nearby tree. I think the little guy stowed it away as it came back in a few minutes to clean up the seeds.

Winter Wren Calling in classic deep forest floor habitat on a fallen tree. The smallest of wrens, this charming bird puts its whole body into its calls. A year-round resident of the high southern Appalachians this is exciting for me as it is the first time I got this elusive bird on film and the setting is spot on perfect with a special guest appearance.

The Bobcat is the most elusive of all Backyard animals - an occasional glimpse in the trail camera or as in this case a look at their scat or business end or poop is most enlightening. Packed full of hair these big wild cats live off of rabbits, raccoons, squirrels and other small mammals. One day I hope to find a den high up in the rocks and get some video of family life.

Close up views of immature male and female Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks. A small flock has taken to sunflower seeds in Backyard North for the first time. This is the southern end of their range so I don't think they migrate anywhere, just congregate for the winter months. Interestingly, have seen no mature adult males, its harder to tell with the females but mature males lose all of their brown. Very attractive and friendly birds.

Blue Jay resorts to the dreaded squeaky gate or rusty "pump handle" call to scare off a young cardinal - sort of like nails on a blackboard. You may remember this young cardinal standing up to a young Blue Jay at: https://youtu.be/MLvZbt7wI08 but this is a mature Blue Jay with no patience. Even still the Cardinal does not give up!

Squirrels are foodies and are incredibly intelligent so proper preparation of their mushrooms should be no surprise. There is practically an unlimited supply of fungi is the forest and with nuts there is plenty to eat. It's possible they are drying mushrooms for winter storage. Note on squirrel behavior - this was filmed in an area where squirrels have seen few if any humans and they are very wary - you might hear them, but rarely see them. Totally different behavior than around housing.

Little brother squirrel is out of the nest box now (Fall) and full of attitude, but doesn't quite know how Red Squirrel society works. His older half-brother born late in the previous winter shows him what happens when he steps out of line. That is a 12-foot fall and you can hear the little guy shrieking all the way down, but they are flexible especially when young and in a few minutes he's back pestering his older brother, but eventually settles down and learns a lesson.

The classic Blue Jay call up close and very loud with my external microphone. Play this on your Smart Phone for your Backyard Jays and watch out! This very bird was attacking my window above the PC while I was editing the video! I think he recognized himself and freaked out. This is the call the jays up here in the Mountains use to announce to all who are interested that they are coming in for a load of sunflower seeds and all should clear the area - sort of an approach announcement. Hearing it from somewhere else will really rile them up.

Elk runs from Rabbit! Simply amazing Appalachian Cottontail Rabbit takes on mature Great Smoky Mountain female Elk. Mother Rabbit shows up every morning for her bird seed breakfast and this is her territory, but this day an Elk stops by and Miss Bunny is having none of it. Outweighed like 400 to 1 she is fearless and the Elk a bit embarrassed at first when it runs from a rabbit.

This female Rose Breasted Grosbeak is not going to be happy until she gets those bugs out of the orb weaver's web on a Hemlock tree. This behavior has apparently not been too well documented on video, although there is a technical name for this that I just learned - Kleptoparasitism (a form of feeding in which one animal takes prey or other food from another that has caught, collected, or otherwise prepared the food, including stored food). Always something new to learn by observing Nature!
Here is a link to a short scientific paper on the subject:https://sora.unm.edu/sites/default/fi...

Such an energetic little chipmunk that runs as fast as it can down the porch every time he "steals" sunflower seeds. So I put a special camera at the end of the run to "catch" the Chipmunk in action. To see the previous video that gave me this idea check out: https://youtu.be/CllL9fP9lIU
