How Do Woodpeckers Peck Hard Wood?

Mother Red Bellied Woodpecker is guarding her babies in the nest box and what does she do for relaxation and exercise - well she pecks at the walls of her house of course! In watching her close-up pecking technique we can clearly see how woodpeckers successfully peck away at extremely hard cured wood in this case. They use their head and beak like a hammer and chisel and work it at an angle from sides to efficiently chip away the wood. If you look closely over the years they have worked over the walls pretty good.
