Exciting to see this stunning male Cape May Warbler on September 28th in the Great Smoky Mountains Stream Cam taking a short bath during migration. First time to get this bird on video that's why its always so exciting to see what the trail cams have found. This warbler summers and breeds in the boreal forests of Canada in spruce and conifer forests and the tiger-striped males are easy to recognize in spring and usually fade in late summer but this male is still popping stripes and color in early Fall. In summer it eats insects, but during migration and winter it varies its diet with nectar from flowers and with juice that it obtains by piercing fruit with its especially sharp tongue. It may have picked Backyard North to take a break from southward migration because of the stand of dense eastern hemlocks over the stream. I have never seen this bird in Florida during migration or in winter it mostly winters in the Caribbean, where it is often seen in palm trees.
