Its always a joy when the red squirrel kittens leave their mountain forest nest in spring and show up on the Hemlock Tree feeder. Cameos by beautiful Blue Jays and some nice bird calls and songs you should recognize. They are so interactive and unafraid at this age, but the Gray Squirrels are run off even by these little guys. There are at least 3 this year and one little on is almost all gray which is unusual. More on it later.

A mating pair of Pileated Woodpeckers are working to remove an old Tulip/Poplar Tree stump next to the deck. The tree was starting to get way to big for the area - you don't want these behemoth trees growing near a foundation. But I left the stump knowing that it would be a great feeding position for birds and squirrels and would eventually attract the big Woodies - Success!!

I spent Earth Day in Cade's Cove at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and was fortunate to come across a mother Black Bear and her two cubs who judging by their size are well into their second year and will probably be on their own by the end of Summer. They spend two years with their mother learning about life and survival before striking out on their own. I really enjoyed the ambiance of this long-range view of the bears out in the open in their natural environment and I hope that comes across. There are few places left in the east US where these amazing creatures can live their lives out naturally without fear. Enjoy!

Mother House Finch takes a bath in the mountain stream at Backyard North and its about freezing, but remember birds love and need water especially when its cold. Dozens of siskins and goldfinches now and they are hungry.

Nature's Chocolate Bunny. I captured new behind the scenes footage of the life of a marsh rabbit in the wild. The Marsh Rabbit is a smaller and much darker version of the more familiar eastern cottontail rabbit, which is best known for its conspicuous cotton puff tail and long ears. In contrast, the marsh rabbit has a very small gray-brown tail and short ears. Marsh rabbits are almost dark chocolate colored and somewhat similar in appearance to guinea pigs.

The surviving eldest Eastern Screech owlet is healthy and growing fast and getting all the attention of its doting and dedicated parents Luna and Odie. Sadly, the two youngest did not make it for some reason. The live feed continues until the precious owlet fledges. "Night of the Lepus" the Easter Bunnies alter ego. This Florida Marsh Rabbit seems to be smelling something of great concern. Rabbits are pretty tough in the marsh with lots of predators so they pay attention and know how to take care of themselves.

The sound of an Eastern Towhee Singing for a mate in a late season snowstorm lifts the spirits and a red squirrel digging in the snow for some black oil sunflower seeds reminds us of the resilience and positive outlook of all our wild backyard friends. They don't live in the past or worry about the future they deal with one day at a time doing the best they can.
