Amazing color palette of Autumn in the Great Smoky Mountains really sets off the deep green of the hummingbird. Bokeh is the effect of a soft out-of-focus background that you get when shooting a subject, using a fast lens, at a wide aperture. Also, in this case using a super long telephoto lens with a lot of distance between the tiny hummer and the forest dressed in amber and red in the background. Simply put, bokeh is the pleasing or aesthetic quality of out-of-focus blur in a photograph and in this case the video composition was just luck as it was also quite cloudy. It was cold in late October, but always leave your hummingbird nectar out longer than you think necessary in case a hungry late migrant passes through. This is an immature male and you can see a few spots of ruby on his throat just as he takes off at the end. As he matures he will lose the white tail feather tips.
