Dark Fishing Spider Facts
I had the pleasure recently of spending quality time with this large female Dark Fishing Spider. The Dark Fishing Spider - Scientific Name Dolomedes tenebrosus – of the fishing and nursery spider family - are large, hairy land rovers.
They attract attention because of their large size and impressive appearance.
and are often misidentified as a wolf spider or tarantula and killed on sight before they can be positively identified, and that's a shame because they are quite beneficial animals.
The scientific name for this species, “tenebrosus,” is from the Latin word for “dark” or “gloomy,” probably because there are so few light markings on this overall dark brown animal.
Dark Fishing spiders are the largest non-web building spiders one would normally encounter in North Carolina and most of the eastern US. They can be found from southern Canada south to Florida and west to Texas and the Dakotas.
Adults are found throughout late spring and summer.
These spiders tend to hide in dark crevices during the day and hunt at night.
I encountered this fishing spider in early June - and May thru June is the most common time to encounter the big females getting ready to lay eggs or defending their nurseries.

Little Creatures At Night
Nighttime is a special time for the little creatures surrounding the forest stream.
You might be surprised to see small sparrows taking a bath and a drink after dark. It is not uncommon for song sparrows which normally have quite long tails to be seen tailless as this one is as they change out feathers. You never see them in daytime because they are at the bottom of the food chain, but riparian forest areas are full of various species of small rodents. Of course the raccoons always stop by for a drink of fresh water and check under the rocks for a snack. Moths and other insects are drawn to the water and inquisitive young raccoons occasionally take an interest in the hidden cameras that reveal their lives to us. Fortunately this little one got bored after a bit and left the secret witness alone to film again.

House Wrens Leave Nest Box
The parents of last two of five House Wren nestlings know they are ready to leave the nest box but the tiny nestlings are not so confident. The biggest almost falls out of the box and then retreats. After a few more false starts they made the short flight into the nearby dense hemlock tree to safety.
Woodlink Wooden Bluebird House - Model BB1 on Amazon at https://amzn.to/46gEldp is great for wrens, chickadees, and many other small songbirds besides bluebirds.

House Wren Song a Concert Documentary
10 minute House Wren concert - singing and singing and singing! Little Mister House Wren has a lot of energy – And for a little guy a huge voice for singing and calling. He can sing like this from dawn till dusk when he's is trying to defend a nest box and attract a female.
Filmed with my trusty Canon SX70HS now 4 years old available on Amazon at: https://amzn.to/2QftDPd and SIRUI T04S Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with Fluid Video Head https://amzn.to/42GRIjN Commission may be Earned through affiliate links.
This singing can go on all day - all summer long – Mr. Wren is not a quitter - so if you've ever experienced this phenomena you know it can get a bit old after awhile. But these outgoing little birds have a ton of personality and will often sit within feet of you and go about their business.
What is unusual is there is already another house wren nest box with chicks in it about 50 feet away. That wren couple is busy feeding their chicks, more on that in another video. And those wrens keep this guy away and things seem to be working out. Although it remains to be seen if mister wren will attract a female to his nice box full of sticks. His priority now is to keep calling and not letting any other birds use his nest box.
The song sparrows, in particular, seem to tire of Mr House Wren dominating the Backyard soundscape and will often prompt him to move along after awhile.

House Finch Father Feeds Fledglings
The male House Finch with his stunning reddish head and upper body is responsible for feeding all the fledglings fresh out in their new world and they are a handful. Filmed with Campark T100 Trail Camera available at: https://shrsl.com/3nywk

The House Finches have fledged their first brood of the year and it is always quite a fun scene. The male will feed the fledglings for about two weeks.
Broods are usually 4 to 6 fledglings, here there are at least four.
I love the sweet calls of the endearing House Finches. And right away mother House Finch will start preparing for the next brood – perhaps fixing up and using the same nest - they usually have 3 or 4 broods from April through August.
The House Finches avoided the dreaded Brown Headed Cowbird nest parasitism again this year, but sadly the Song Sparrow did not, more on that in another video. The resident House Finches are a delight to have around and typically nest deep inside the the same dense arborvitae bushes next to the deck every year and are very vocal before, during and after raising their broods.
House finches are seed eaters and particularly love fresh moist shelled sunflower hearts. Originally residents of the far western United States the charming house finches were sent east as caged birds for the pet trade starting in the 19th century and many were set loose or escaped and they have since spread all over the country.
After all the breeding is over the local finches will start to form into small flocks called a “charm” of finches and then gradually join into larger flocks as more birds join from other areas and winter approaches, It's not so much that they migrate as move around looking for food and better weather and generally trend to southern areas, but some can usually be found at feeders all winter.
All Fledgling house finches look like adult female finches - mostly brown with heavily streaked breasts – and typically a few stray feathers sticking out of the top of their heads.
The father's job with this first brood is nearly done as the fledglings can now fend for themselves at the feeder, but will still be fed off and on for a few more days.
