The Florida Gopher Turtle is an endangered and federally protected species due mainly to rapid habitat loss as Florida continues non-stop development. They live to be 60+ years old and this one is a big full-grown adult of around 18 inches long so could be 40 or 50 years old or more. Hard to tell if male or female without closer investigation, but I dont' want to get too close or pick it up. Fortunately these gentle giants do not have to cross any roads around here, which helps them to live long lives. Its always exciting when I find Father Screech Owl each season. The Owls like a nest box near a big tree or forest cover and Father Owl watches over the nest box all day long and rests so he can hunt and bring food as soon as the sun goes down. He is a handsome Red Morph Eastern Screech Owl and Mother Owl is a gray morph which is much more common. The stunning pattern of fox red and white with a bit of black highlights makes for one of the most beautiful owls.

A Puffer Fish in the Backyard, not really, but took me by surprise when I saw this inflated brown thing on the grass. First the Thrasher shares a meal with Mr Squirrel and shows off its characteristic thrashing and pounding of the ground, then a well-deserved bath and then a Puffer Fish air dry (3:20) - all in a days work for these entertaining personalities. These birds will make your day! And if you don't believe the Puffer Fish imitation ( which are fairly common in Florida) also know as a blow fish or porcupine fish - just check out https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/6... even the colors, open mouth and eyes match. I can't recall ever seeing a songbird inflate itself to help dry off.

A new colony of Africanized honey bees (AHB) has spun off the main colony living in the Squirrel Condo nest box. A very fascinating thing to see as thousands of bees swarm in a big ball around a new queen and wait for the scouts to come back with a new location and a signal to take off. This is a good sign that the Backyard Bees are healthy. I have no problem with these interesting bees, leave them alone and they just go about their busy business!

Owls are back! The Screech Owls are nesting in the new Songbird Essentials Screech Owl Nest Box that I just put up in February. The owls were ignoring the old nest box from last year and fearing a lost season I put up a new nest box with a quality Green Backyard nest box camera and they moved in - better late than never.

The sounds or calls of a Fish Crow are fascinating, I need to learn what they mean. My Fish Crow friend is back from last year and while everything is literally shut down in Florida due to the Caronavirus I'm spending more time trying to bond with this crow. I'm standing about 10 feet away while filming this and trying to get him/her to come to my hand to feed. Rather than do that it just talks or sings to me for minutes on end. Probably saying put down the food and walk away.......

Brown Thrashers are stunning birds - cousins of Mockingbirds and Catbirds. This Brown Thrasher couple is a rare sight in the Backyard - they are probably a breeding pair. They are year round residents in Florida but are known as the State Bird of Georgia!

Male Wild Turkeys put on a stunning mating ritual display or dance in Spring and they are really quite exotic-looking big birds if you've never seen it before. This fellow is putting on quite the show, but it is the hens that initiate mating and so far they are giving him the cold shoulder. I'm sure it will work out for him later.

A small flock (or murder) of Fish Crows descends on the Backyard and we get a bonus of extended singing of a White Winged Dove with their famous "who cooks for you" call in the Background which the Barred Owl also uses at night with a little more flair added. Fish crows have a decidedly difference call than the traditional caw of the American Crows.
