Red Shouldered Hawk Territory Dispute

A very large, but immature Red Shouldered Hawk is run out of the Backyard by an adult and a few Blue Jays who seem to be on the side of the older established hawk. Maybe they prefer the enemy they know how to handle rather than this new one. The tall long leaf pine forest is prime breeding and hunting territory due to surrounding habitat loss so the resident hawks are not likely to be pushed out.

Precious young male Rose Breasted Grosbeak seems to be contemplating life and his upcoming first fall migration while sitting in an Eastern Hemlock tree. The southern Great Smoky Mountains are the southernmost limit of their breeding range and they are here all summer raising their young, but they are heading south soon.

Raccoon Loses Rear Leg but Perseveres

One of the Backyard north raccoons showed up missing its right hind leg recently. It was most likely the result of chewing the remains of its hind leg off at what would be the equivalent of our knee joint which was probably shattered. Amazingly the Raccoon is hanging in there, but very vulnerable in this condition. I suspect this was not done by a professional trapping as it was August, but by someone who has an old trap that is way too strong and big for a raccoon, but meant for a coyote and larger or maybe even an illegal old bear trap. It may have been baited for coyotes or who knows what goes through some peoples mind when they do such things - and the raccoon had the misfortune to be attracted to the bait. It would be hard for a Raccoon to chew through solid leg bone, but the damage appears to be done right at the "knee joint" which when smashed is just held together by ligaments and tissue.

Huge Bison Herd Crosses Road - Yellowstone National Park

Front row seat as 100's of Bison or American Buffalo cross right in front us in Lamar Valley at Yellowstone National Park in September. Experienced it from the first to the last bison in the herd and It took nearly 8 minutes for them to cross the road. I resisted the urge to get out and risk being one of those people who make the news doing dumb things. They passed within feet of the vehicle. Northern Harrier Hawk Catches Prey - Badlands, South Dakota

A Northern Harrier hawk hunts by flying low over marshland and prairie and hovering and then striking at small mammals. The hawk catches what appears to be a gopher in this case in the Badlands of South Dakota. Note the Bison in the background. Harriers will be arriving in large numbers in Florida in winter. You can see why a hovering aircraft like the Harrier was named after these amazing birds. Hawk's Amazing Bath in Mountain Stream

This is the best spy-camera footage I have ever captured I hope you enjoy it! A young Cooper's Hawk takes a bath for 8 minutes and is at once funny and fascinating as we get a sneak peek into its life. I love the way it washes it's bottom. What happens in the bathroom stays in the bathroom.

It does especially well with closeups and you'll see a lot more video from the mountain stream in the future.

Trumpeter Swans River Meditation - Yellowstone National Park

Relax to Trumpeter Swans preening and swimming at sunrise in early autumn in the Firehole River at Yellowstone National Park which is fed by waters from many geysers including old faithful. A cold, clear morning results in steamy fog over the much warmer river.

Squirrel Steals Peanut Butter Sandwich

Riley Raccoon is late for breakfast and after a Blue Jay fails to snatch his peanut butter sandwich one of the Backyard squirrels takes it. The Blue Jays expression is priceless as it watches the squirrel eat the sandwich. Cameos by Ms Cardinal and a bald-headed Blue Jay.
