I was quite surprised to see a big male Raccoon chase down and attack a male feral cat on the trail camera in the "jungle" behind the Backyard. It looked and sounded bad for the cat as the Raccoon overtook it from behind. But how did the cat fare?

A lot of great Blue Jay calls are a bonus! This Great Blue Heron spent the night high in a pine tree in the Backyard. Sleeping high in trees is much safer than sleeping on the ground where coyotes and bobcats etc. can get at them and also means they will catch the warm morning sun as soon as it rises for a healthy sun bath to start the day - this also provides some awesome lighting for video.

One of the resident Grackles takes a rare extended bath and shows off its beauty and personality. There is a small group of Grackle families that make the Backyard woods their permanent home and they are a delight to have around. They will come and get peanuts I throw, but only after the Blue Jays have gotten their fill and moved on. On the other hand the Mourning Doves and Catbirds defer to the Grackles at the bath and wait until they are done.

The Red Bellied Woodpecker couple has been learning to play peanut catch. It is a work in progress, but they are certainly game to try even with all the distraction and competition of blue jays and squirrels in the Backyard.

The sounds of a Loggerhead Shrike singing and a short discussion of this unique bird. The loggerhead shrike looks like just another songbird until you get a close look at the raptor like big curved beak and the fact that it spends its time perched like a bird of prey waiting for a victim.
Despite its relatively diminutive size, the loggerhead shrike is a bird of prey as well as a songbird. Its nickname: the butcherbird.

The rare Florida Scrub Jay is the only bird species endemic to Florida and one of only 15 birds endemic to the United States. The Florida Scrub Jay is listed as a threatened under the endangered species act and rapid critical habitat loss continues. They live in oak scrub land with isolated pines and can not live in dense canopy so loss of habitat to development and growth of dense tree cover due to unnatural fire suppression shrinks suitable habitat. They live well behind backyard south in an open area with oak shrubs. They do not like the dense jungle behind the Backyard and since there is an infinite supply of small lizards and such they show no interest in feeders. Although in some parts of Florida they have been trained to eat peanuts in shell just like the ubiquitous blue jays. This jay is guarding its territory on a very windy day.

Female Downy Woodpeckers foraging on Palmetto trees in the Florida Backyard which are just full of bugs. The Downys are the smallest North American woodpecker about the same size as the red cockaded woodpeckers that also live around here. The female Dwonys lack the red patch on the nape of the neck. One of these females has a fair amount of yellowish coloration on its head which is unusual in the eastern and Florida Downys.
