Screech Owl in Flight - Slow Motion

Mother owl takes off from her guard tree back to the nest box while I and the usual Backyard suspects watch in amazement. Watch to the end and you'll see what I have to put up with while filming in the Backyard :-) Because the owlet is now large and its getting hot mother owl would rather spend much of the day outside the box but close to keep an eye on it!

Bat In The Patio Umbrella

A Tri-Colored or Eastern Pipistrelle Bat (Perimyotis subflavus) roosting in the patio umbrella offers a close-up view of this seldom seen and fascinating creature. This bat is very small with a body not even two inches long and is actually quite cute. Bats are very beneficial eating mosquitoes that carry disease. These bats are so small they can easily hide in the jungle behind the Backyard under palm fronds and large leafs behind loose tree bark or in moss clumps and small cavities in trees. Interesting that they seem to have a preference for closed umbrellas. More info at: https://www.floridabats.org/tricolore...

Cottontail Rabbit Camouflage

Example of how hard it is to see an Appalachian Cottontail Rabbit in seasonal winter grass in their typical feeding environment. Also illustrates the benefits of not mowing your lawn but letting it turn into a meadow - see: https://youtu.be/oegaQMyQuXs

Amazing Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

The pretty white flowers of the Bloodroot plant cover the high forest floor in early spring. Usually one of the first wildflowers to appear and very distinctive. But the pretty white flower belies what lies underneath - the bright blood red root sap. Easy to find in moist eastern forests bloodroot has long been touted as having various medicinal properties - as a cure for skin cancer and even used in toothpaste. But the raw blood red root juice is a potent and dangerous substance best not messed with. See: https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ing... regarding use and side effects of prepared bloodroot products. From an amateur Naturalist perspective it is a very fascinating wildflower all the better appreciated when you know a little more about it. Filmed in the Great Smoky Mountains (not in the park) in early April 2018 on a cold and windy day at 4,500 feet elevation.

Flycatchers Try To Evict Screech Owl From Nest Box

The Great Crested Flycatchers are resorting to verbal harassment to try and get Mother Screech Owl out of the prime nest box housing so they can lay their eggs. Of course, Mother Owl is having none of it! There are other nest boxes available, but traditionally the Flycatchers have used this nest box, but momma owl is running behind schedule. I suspect like in some years past the flycatchers will wait a little longer until the owls leave and then claim this box.

Mother Screech Owl and Child - Strong Bond

Mother Eastern Screech Owl and her only surviving child or "owlet" have a special bond spending all that time alone together in the nest box. It is such a different dynamic than the hectic times when there are 3 or 4 owlets like usual. I think the owlet is a female which is good since the other eggs were not viable - ensuring another generation. Very easy for the parents to give her lots of food so she is growing fast and should be gone within a week.
Hopefully the failure of the other eggs to hatch is not a trend developing, they owls have been amazingly successful over the years.

Great Crested Flycatchers Calling - Close and Loud

It's Flycatcher time! A breeding pair of Great Crested Flycatchers are back looking for a nest box in the Backyard. These are loud outgoing birds - they are quiet and secretive all year until breeding time. Problem is Mother Screech Owl is running behind schedule, the flycatchers usually claim the empty owl nest box in April after the owls are done. The owls should be done in about a week so they may wait on her or they may take the flycatcher box I got for them on the house wall. But my experience has been they prefer the owl box, fortunately they have no sense of smell.

Father Screech Owl Catches Giant Sphinx Moth

Father Eastern Screech Owl is catching an interesting assortment of creatures to feed the only surviving owlet. I didn't know we had moths this big in the Backyard - I thought it was a bird when I first saw it hanging from his claws. I believe it is a variety of giant Sphinx Moth - it must have a wingspan of 4 to 5 inches. In any case the owlet is eating good! Filmed with a Bushnell Trophy Cam trail camera available on Amazon at: https://amzn.to/2HiChtq

Florida Screech Owl House Live - The "Only Owlet"

Live from the Florida Screech Owl House - Mother and Father Owl and their precious only surviving Owlet! Mother Screech Owl is in the nest box with her only surviving offspring this year. For some reason two of the eggs did not hatch. Because it is an only owlet it has grown rapidly in 20 days and should be leaving "fledging" the nest box between April 27 and 30.

Screech Owl Catches Large Invasive Lizards

The Male Eastern Screech Owl has been catching very large lizards to feed the only surviving owlet! No wonder she's so big already! I'm not sure, but I think these lizards are Giant Amevia introduced by the pet trade and released or escaped into the wild. No native Florida lizard grows this long. Giant Amevia are native to Central and South America. These alert, active lizards are also called green whiptails or Jungle Runners in the pet trade. The long whip like tail makes up nearly 2/3 of this lizards total length as you can see.
