Little Spider Eats Big Spider

Spider cannibalism - perhaps shouldn't be that surprising, but this spider versus spider battle should have been a mismatch! A huge roaming Wolf Spider on the hunt taken down by a little tangled-web house spider. But the Wolf Spider crawled into a sticky ambush and the house spider, which is a relative of the Brown and Black Widows struck first slowing it down in its tangled web and injecting venom. I find this outcome pretty surprising, but these little false widows hanging around the deck with their brown egg sacks pack a bit of a punch. I was bitten by one once and it left about a pencil eraser sized fluid filled wound on my hip that took several months to completely go away. I always check the furniture before sitting down outdoors. Note the relaxing bird songs of the Eastern Towhee singing "Drink your tea" and the song sparrow in the background as the big spider is slowly digested from the inside out.

Cardinal Versus Blue Jay Staring Contest


Mr. Cardinal puts on his game face and totally intimidates a Blue Jay at the feeder, you can almost read the Cardinals lips/beak when the Blue Jay flinches - their faces are so expressive. Of course that is not the end of it - the Blue Jay being a sore loser is either calling in backup or being as obnoxious as possible to spoil the Cardinals relaxing breakfast.

Dark Eyed Junco and Deep Forest Baby Crow Calls

An unusual encounter with an inquisitive Dark Eyed Junco on a trail in the remote forests of the Great Smoky Mountains and some interesting calls from birds that can't be seen - which is typical of the summer forest environment - hear but not see. Listen for the fascinating calls of what I think are baby crows or perhaps baby raptors in the nest and how they carry through the mountain forest.

Eastern Towhees are one of the most outgoing Backyard Birds in the Mountains of North Carolina as Ms Bunny will attest. Known for their famous "Drink Your Tea" song - they have a habit of making a high-pitched cheerful whistle call while they forage on the ground - and for an added bonus the Bunny and the Towhee share breakfast on the lawn.

Nuthatch Prepper Stores Food in Clobo Trail Camera

The ingenious White Breasted Nuthatches are using the tree mounting strap of the new Clobo Trail Camera as a Sunflower Seed Holster to store their cache of seeds. I've had trail cameras up for years and this is the first time I've seen this behavior - evolution. When I first removed the camera a bunch of seeds and suet pieces fell out and I felt bad, but the Nuthatches quickly put them back again.

Red Panda or Mutant Raccoon?

This amazing creature showed up in the Backyard recently, could it possibly be a North American Red Panda thought to be extinct for 5 millions years - or more likely just about the strangest Raccoon you are ever going to see. The Red Panda and the Raccoon are distant relatives. This huge fellow is unusual for his red color, heavy body, huge front and rear paws that are way out of proportion to its body (rear feet look like about a size 6) and that bobbed tail. This guy has been around awhile and is a magnificent creature to behold closeup. Raccoons active in the daytime are not that unusual especially back in the "jungle" where these live.
