The mythical Snipe of the childhood "snipe hunt" challenge is actually a real bird. This fascinating bird is a winter visitor to Florida and makes a haunting winnowing sound with its tail feathers while flying in a downward swooping motion to defend territory and attract a mate on summer breeding grounds far to the north.
