Herons and Egrets of the Florida Prairie and Rangeland

Areas of rangeland and prairie contain seasonal wetlands and smaller areas remain water covered even through the dry winter season. These wet areas among the prairie are a magnet for wading birds and wildlife and support an amazing diversity of life. If you get up early and get out there with the sunrise on a great day one may spot 8 to 10 different species of the heron family in one location along with many other birds. The prehistoric calls of the sandhill cranes are often a constant soundtrack of this environment.
