Northern Mockingbird has a nice refreshing morning bath in a new bird bath. This is a little bigger and medium deep bird bath that's good for larger songbirds birds. Watch for a Yellow Rumped Warbler to stop by at the beginning.
Severe winter up north - American Robins going the wrong way in Late February. Not sure what it portends, but a rare Backyard visit by a flock of 100's of ravenous Robins is a wild scene and causes consternation by interrupting the daily routine of the resident Blue Jays and Squirrels. The Robins form large flocks in winter and are on the lookout for food and will attempt to eat anything that looks remotely edible including Brazilian Peppers, Palmetto Berries, Chinese Tallow seeds and of course kicking around for bugs in leaf litter. They depart as suddenly and loudly as they arrive! Always a treat as Robins are a very rare sight around here.
Feral Tabby Cat Visits the Backyard Birdbath. First in a series of videos documenting my attempts to socialize or relocate a wild cat that had started hunting birds and squirrels in the backyard. It had killed several Mourning Doves by this time. This cat was very wary and would run into the woods behind the backyard at the first sight or sound of me opening a door. I started the process by observing it from a distance without being detected. It is a big gorgeous cat, but clearly not compatible with Backyard Birding and wildlife, especially our young owlets in the late winter.
Brown Thrashers are rarely seen in the backyard - even more so in the open having a drink. A rather striking looking bird they are always a thrill to see.
Raccoon fight caught on night-vision! - short but violent turf battle near the typically tranquil birdbath. This is a game trail and it looks like some young raccoon's away from Mom cross paths with a lone male. Surprising hyena like sounds as they run away. Like a lot of fights in nature - not much damage was done - but lessons were learned. Love how the little one on the far left totally stays out of it :-) More HD videos every week. 6 1/2 Hours of Backyard Bird visits in 20 minutes!
I'm in the process of testing the suitability of a Bushnell 8MP Trophy Cam HD Trail Cam for use in Backyard Birding applications and will include results in future Blog posts. For now, here are some preliminary results using the Trail Cam to capture video of birds - and a few small furry creatures - that visited one of our small birdbaths during the course of a recent afternoon. Initial results are promising, but of course there are limitations. More to come - In the meantime, enjoy the video!
