Red Squirrel Eating Hemlock Nuts

Young Red Squirrel eating the bounty of small Eastern Hemlock Tsuga Canadensis "pine cone" seeds in October as they pop open on the tree. This is one of the six squirrels that left the nest in early October
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTV6w2L7z9Y  it is learning fast which is good because it will have to survive on its own in the woods as they are not fed from October til spring. The Eastern Hemlock grows to a very large size but it has some of the smallest seed cones of all large conifers.

The Real Bigfoot

The mysterious "Bigfoot". High in the Great Smoky Mountains in an Old Growth Eastern Hemlock forest at 4000 feet elevation lives a creature that has evolved to stand on two huge feet incredibly out of proportion to the rest of its body and attached to powerful legs to take advantage the unique primordial forest environment - it runs incredibly fast and makes amazing jumps to escape. I was fortunate to capture a video of its feet from just the right angle and have given this Creature the name of "Bigfoot"

Black Capped Chickadee in Eastern Hemlock Tree

Video: Black Capped Chickadee in Eastern Hemlock Tree

A Black Capped Chickadee eating larvae on an Eastern Hemlock Tree in the Great Smoky Mountains. Nice to get a shot of a Chickadee eating natural food and also working to give the Hemlock Tree a little help as they are endangered trees in the high mountains. Chickadees feeding don't sit still long.
