This Louisiana Water thrush was a surprise on the Backyard Florida trail cam when I returned after a long trip recently. Louisianan and Northern Water thrushes are actually warblers that look a lot like thrushes and hang around near water – thus the name water thrush.
They both incessantly wag their tails, or in fact dip their whole bodies – the wagtail warblers as I call them.
This is not typical habitat for a Louisiana Water thrush who favor moving water of streams while the northern water thrush like more stagnant water in woodlands. This is better habitat for the migratory northern water thrush which will be passing through Florida starting about now, but this bird with bold white eyebrows and lack of streaking on a mostly white throat is most likely a Louisiana water thrush making do in a seasonal wet/dry forest behind Backyard north.

Riley the Raccoon has returned from finishing school to demonstrate his improved table manners. He remains a work in progress. He starts out well, but then the wheels come off. Yes, Hummingbirds do stay in one place for awhile so we can watch them - while they are preening and sleeping. This male spends more than 5 minutes cleaning himself up and stretching after spending the morning protecting "his" nectar feeder. Early August is prime hummingbird season up in the Great Smoky Mountains as breeding is over and they build up their strength for the big fall migration.

Raccoon Kids or "Kits" engage in an epic round of horsing around in the Backyard jungle as soon as Mom's back is turned. But when she gives them a warning they assume a guilty look any human can recognize and immediately focus, as danger is always at hand. Another family that is older and much bigger is passing through and its time to move on.
