Robin vs Blue Jay - Wild Bird Bath Battles in 4K

Birds feel vulnerable when bathing and like humans are not generally agreeable to sharing a bath with others, especially across species. This natural cool spring fed bird bath deep in the forest of the Great Smoky Mountains is a magnet for birds especially as water becomes more scarce in late summer. Generally a natural queuing process takes place with birds perching nearby to wait their turn. But no bird likes to linger when bathing more than a Robin and few birds are more impatient than Blue jays – and thus a classic battle over a relaxing bath takes place. If you watch closely you'll see both birds trying to hurry up the other while it is their turn – Robins tend to be passive aggressive and blue jays just feel enough is enough. Ptarmigan Preening

Pronounced taar-muh-gn -- There are very few places in the Western US where one can find Ptarmigan and they are high in the Rocky Mountains. They are very adept at hiding, but I found this white-tailed ptarmigan roosting at Glacier National Park. Fox Squirrel

This is a handsome example of the fox squirrel, the largest tree squirrel. It is 10-15 inches in length not including the tail. It has three distinct color patterns. In the northeastern part of its range, it is gray above with yellowish or orangish undersides. In the western part of its range as here, it is gray above and rust colored on its undersides. In the southern part of its range, it is black and brown with a white stripe on its face and a white tip on its tail. The fox squirrel is also known as the eastern fox squirrel. This fox squirrel was filmed in a cottonwood stand in the North Dakota Badlands at the westernmost limit of its natural distribution. They have been introduced to some cities of the far west and like all squirrels can thrive in a suburban environment. Fox squirrels are strictly diurnal and spend more of their time on the ground than most other tree squirrels. They are still, however, agile climbers. They are impressive jumpers, easily spanning fifteen feet in horizontal leaps and free-falling twenty feet or more to a soft landing on a limb or trunk. They are not particularly gregarious or playful, in fact they have been described as solitary and asocial creatures, coming together only in breeding season. At a distance they can be mistaken for gray squirrels but upon closer inspection are significantly larger, bulkier with more musculature on their legs and as can be seen here have extended toes on their rear paws. This fox squirrel has an exceptionally long and beautiful orangish brown tail. Filmed with Canon SX70HS on Amazon at: https://amzn.to/2QftDPd Commision Earned 🔴 New HD videos uploaded weekly. Cape May Warbler Takes a Migration Bath Break

Exciting to see this stunning male Cape May Warbler on September 28th in the Great Smoky Mountains Stream Cam taking a short bath during migration. First time to get this bird on video that's why its always so exciting to see what the trail cams have found. This warbler summers and breeds in the boreal forests of Canada in spruce and conifer forests and the tiger-striped males are easy to recognize in spring and usually fade in late summer but this male is still popping stripes and color in early Fall. In summer it eats insects, but during migration and winter it varies its diet with nectar from flowers and with juice that it obtains by piercing fruit with its especially sharp tongue. It may have picked Backyard North to take a break from southward migration because of the stand of dense eastern hemlocks over the stream. I have never seen this bird in Florida during migration or in winter it mostly winters in the Caribbean, where it is often seen in palm trees. Louisianna Waterthrush - A Unique Warbler

This Louisiana Water thrush was a surprise on the Backyard Florida trail cam when I returned after a long trip recently. Louisianan and Northern Water thrushes are actually warblers that look a lot like thrushes and hang around near water – thus the name water thrush. They both incessantly wag their tails, or in fact dip their whole bodies – the wagtail warblers as I call them. This is not typical habitat for a Louisiana Water thrush who favor moving water of streams while the northern water thrush like more stagnant water in woodlands. This is better habitat for the migratory northern water thrush which will be passing through Florida starting about now, but this bird with bold white eyebrows and lack of streaking on a mostly white throat is most likely a Louisiana water thrush making do in a seasonal wet/dry forest behind Backyard north. Blue Jay Watches in Awe at Squirrel's Gluttony

Have you ever watched somebody load up at the buffet line and wondered whether they will leave enough for you? Then you know the feeling. The expression on this Blue Jay as he glares at the squirrel and then moves closer while it continues to clean up the sunflower seeds is priceless.
