A male black Bear stops by the Backyard checking for food and finds none then goes away when I open the door. Good bear! A bear that isn't fed by humans is a safer bear. Mister Cardinal Is Fed Up With Cowbirds

Mister Cardinal Is Fed Up With Cowbirds

Song Sparrow parents raised 3 Brown Headed Cowbird parasites and at the time of these video clips Mister Cardinal had just about had enough of the song sparrow's peculiarly annoying parasite family! Either the song sparrow parents were ferrying food back to their giant nestlings or shoveling precious food into a ginormous parasite fledgling's gaping mouth or the rotund fledglings were just parked in the way taking up space on his favorite platform, In any case Mr Cardinal had to put his foot – I mean “beak” down. Which I'm sure left a mark. The desperate need to feed their mammoth kids lead the song sparrow parents to try and stand up to the cardinal with predictable results. And the fledglings being the true parasite slackers they were showed no respect for Mr Angry Bird leading to an ill-advised confrontation that probably left an indelible mark on the cowbird. I love this look on the fledgling experiencing rejection and discipline for the first time in its young life. Of course this was just too much cowbird for Mr. cardinal to bear so I spread more food around to different places so they could eat in peace. The full story of the cowbird saga is at:    • Brown Headed Cowbird Parasites Raised...   Filmed with Campark T100 Trail Camera available at: https://shrsl.com/3nywk Commission may be Earned through affiliate links. 🔴 New HD videos uploaded weekly. Sparrow Feeds Cowbird Chick Parasite

Sparrow Feeds Cowbird Chick Parasite

Stay tuned for the full-length story of observing cowbird parasitism. Mother song Sparrow is exhausted feeding one of three of the huge fast-growing Brown Headed Cowbird chicks that she hatched when mother cowbird laid eggs in her nest. This is called brood parasitism. I do not think any of the song sparrow's eggs survived, but they are trying again on a second brood and I think the cowbirds have moved on. Blue Jay's Feathers Molting in Real Time

Blue Jay's Feathers Molting in Real Time

Or in this case maybe "flying feathers" ! It is pretty common to see so-called bald-headed Blue Jays and other songbirds like Cardinals and Brown Thrashers without head feathers in late summer as they undergo their seasonal molt. Often the head feathers all fall out at about the same time giving the birds the “Vulture Look”. Jays change out all of their other feathers to - its just rarely seen - their flight feathers are swapped out a few at a time so they can continue to fly well to forage, feed, roost and avoid predators. In this rare slow-motion footage at the mountain spring we can see a Blue Jay lose two flight feathers during a vigorous bath – one from each wing. In fact this vigorous bathing my be done to help clear off these loose feathers which may be a little itchy. Late July and August is the time you are most likely to find blue jay feathers laying around the yard and it doesn't mean a bird or cat got them unless they are a lot of them in a pile, but you'll also notice these found feathers can look pretty beat up as these flight feathers are worn out and that's why they need to be replaced. An excellent reference for bird feather ID is “The Feather Atlas” from the US Fish and Wildlife: https://www.fws.gov/lab/featheratlas/ Filmed with Campark T100 Trail Camera available at: https://shrsl.com/3nywk Commissions may be earned through use of affiliate links. 🔴 New HD videos uploaded weekly.
