The sound of a House Finch calling is not going to blow you away, but they are sweet and similar to the contact type calls you hear from Goldfinches. House Finches love to raise their broods right on or around out houses and are such earnest and friendly birds.

The three Screech Owl kids are alive and well and all paid a special visit to the Backyard with their Dad the other evening. I was fortunate to be able to get in on video in the fading light so you all could see them, especially those who watched the live feed of the development. Most of the quality time was spent with the eldest and largest "Riker " but at the end the little one "Finito" made a brief appearance. All is well!

Chipmunks may be cute and endearing (unless they clean out $10 worth of good bird seed in a day). However, they do suffer from at least one of the 7 Deadly Sins - Gluttony. I wanted to get one last close-up video of this amazing capacity before I moved this feeder out of their reach for good. Note that at one point it is questionable whether the chipmunk will get its fat cheeks through the cage on the feeder. At least the millet is left to fall on the ground for the ground feeding birds. Chippy is after sunflower seeds and peanuts!

If you are feeding your backyard birds and not puting out a bird bath you are missing out on a lot of fun watching the birds enjoy themselves and also making their lives easier and your backyard more appealing. It doesn't have to be anything heavy or expensive, in this case it is just a plastic planter base from Wal Mart and it is the perfect depth for most songbirds. Even the little Painted Buntings can create quite a shower in it.

Mother Woodpecker removes youngest chick that passed away yesterday morning thank goodness. If you've ever wondered about this subject this clip shows how it works - the chick must be removed or it will attract flies with maggots and possibly snakes and other predators. Three left look pretty vital this morning. I am so glad she removed it as blow flies and such were already investigating the smell. It was indeed surprisingly difficult for her to lift the chick out of the deep nest box but she made it. If you look closely all three remaining chicks were huddled around a hole in the nest box for a camera like they were trying to take in fresh air. It has been inhumanely humid and wet in the Backyard these past few days and I'm not sure woodpeckers even have a sense of smell, but the air at the bottom of the nest box is no doubt going bad do to decomposition so they may just naturally seek out fresh air. Rare natural extended quality time with a male Downy Woodpecker in Backyard North, one of the smallest woodpecker, it is a scaled- down version of other woodpeckers. Here we see it working the bark of a locust tree and then taking a break for some preening. Its nice to see this bird in a natural setting away from feeders.

Here is some nice footage of the three owlets at the time the feed ended on May 9th. I had to go on a trip and left the live feed running so you and I could watch as well from afar , but the PC got hung up as I was not there to babysit it. Next year I'll consider putting the feed up to the cloud so it is not dependent on software and connection to a PC. In any case, the owlets and parents were very efficient and very healthy this season, but quite a bit late getting started. I suspect after their great success this year they will return earlier to the new box. Just before I left the woodpeckers were starting to lay eggs in the nest box so hope to have an update on them in early June. The owlets have no doubt fledged now and all should be well. Thanks to all who watched.

Backyard birds line up late every afternoon for a refreshing splash. I've
found that these simple molded large planter bases that are hollow and
anywhere from 12 to 18" in diameter just simply put on the ground are the most
popular with birds from little buntings and cardinals up to big Blue Jays.
Most birds don't require or desire very large or deep water just an inch or
inch and a half is enough. As you watch these Blue Jays totally enjoy a
refreshing bath - you'll know water is what helps bring the birds in.

Mother Owl is dropping lizards into the box last night to see if the owlets are ready to eat them all by themselves. The largest owlet is already stuffed and could handle it, but the smallest and the middle owlet take turns trying to eat the lizard with little luck - Mom came back and chewed it up for them - the humility....... Dracula Owl really just wants to be left all alone. Sometimes called transformer, shape-shifting or Dracula act the tiny Eastern Screech Owls of the Backyard are one of the very few small owl species that regularly do this "Concealing Postures" or the German word "Tarnstellung" to survive in a very hostile world. This is mother owl taking a break from the owlets in the nest box in a nearby tree and when observed or threatened they change their shape to be as narrow as possible and mimic a tree branch. This is why Screech Owls are so hard to spot in trees.
