Breaking News! - Human Bird Feeder - Pine Siskin Irruption

Big Bird News! - A historic Pine Siskin Irruption is underway across much of the United States. I take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to turn myself into a human bird feeder in the Great Smoky Mountains. You can't have any more fun in your Backyard than this. If you are fortunate enough to have the Siskins in your Backyard give it a try. For health concerns - you can wear a mask and be sure to clean up thoroughly afterward.

Clark's Nutcracker Mini Documentary

Interesting facts about Clark's Nutcrackers filmed foraging for pine nuts at a high elevation mountain lake in the Wind River Area of Wyoming. These fascinating birds are members of the Corvid (Corvidae) or Crow family that include Jays, Crows and Ravens and are smart birds that have been mistaken for woodpeckers. One of three new bird species documented on the Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-1806). They were absolutely fascinating to watch from my tree-top level vantage point as they collected dozens of pine nuts and cached them for winter.

Northern Cardinal Male Quality Time

Its rare when you can watch nearly 8 minutes of a male Northern Cardinal all alone at the feeder. Maybe his reputation as a bit of a cranky hothead preceded him, but for this time at least he has the high forest feeder all to himself and stress-free. Bird songs and calls ring out in the background including the sound of a rooster that doesn't seem to realize that everyone is up already.

How Do Woodpeckers Peck Hard Wood?

Mother Red Bellied Woodpecker is guarding her babies in the nest box and what does she do for relaxation and exercise - well she pecks at the walls of her house of course! In watching her close-up pecking technique we can clearly see how woodpeckers successfully peck away at extremely hard cured wood in this case. They use their head and beak like a hammer and chisel and work it at an angle from sides to efficiently chip away the wood. If you look closely over the years they have worked over the walls pretty good.

Red Squirrel Kitten Leaves The Nest 2020

Red Squirrel Kitten Leaves The Nest 2020

Back in the Smoky Mountains and the first Red Squirrel kitten of the fall season is out of the nest and making friends. I have been concerned about a lack of red squirrels this year, usually they are running all over the place, but not this year. A few years ago there were six kittens in one nest: https://youtu.be/LTV6w2L7z9Y

Mediterranean Gecko

As their name suggests, Mediterranean geckos are native to Europe, but they are highly successful colonizers and well established in Florida. There are no native nocturnal lizards in Florida, and geckos seem to have filled the niche. Geckos are ‘sit-and-wait’ predators, usually seen on walls and ceilings inside houses, or where ever there is an outdoor light. They feed on moths, cockroaches and other insects and are rarely found far from houses and people.

Mediterranean geckos move and hunt at night. They are extremely vocal – if they are in or around the house you will hear them. Males have a squeaky high-pitched territorial call that sounds like a bird chirping.

Red Shouldered Hawk Territory Dispute

A very large, but immature Red Shouldered Hawk is run out of the Backyard by an adult and a few Blue Jays who seem to be on the side of the older established hawk. Maybe they prefer the enemy they know how to handle rather than this new one. The tall long leaf pine forest is prime breeding and hunting territory due to surrounding habitat loss so the resident hawks are not likely to be pushed out.

Rose Breasted Grosbeak Juvenile Male

Precious young male Rose Breasted Grosbeak seems to be contemplating life and his upcoming first fall migration while sitting in an Eastern Hemlock tree. The southern Great Smoky Mountains are the southernmost limit of their breeding range and they are here all summer raising their young, but they are heading south soon.

Raccoon Loses Rear Leg but Perseveres

One of the Backyard north raccoons showed up missing its right hind leg recently. It was most likely the result of chewing the remains of its hind leg off at what would be the equivalent of our knee joint which was probably shattered. Amazingly the Raccoon is hanging in there, but very vulnerable in this condition. I suspect this was not done by a professional trapping as it was August, but by someone who has an old trap that is way too strong and big for a raccoon, but meant for a coyote and larger or maybe even an illegal old bear trap. It may have been baited for coyotes or who knows what goes through some peoples mind when they do such things - and the raccoon had the misfortune to be attracted to the bait. It would be hard for a Raccoon to chew through solid leg bone, but the damage appears to be done right at the "knee joint" which when smashed is just held together by ligaments and tissue.

Huge Bison Herd Crosses Road - Yellowstone National Park

Front row seat as 100's of Bison or American Buffalo cross right in front us in Lamar Valley at Yellowstone National Park in September. Experienced it from the first to the last bison in the herd and It took nearly 8 minutes for them to cross the road. I resisted the urge to get out and risk being one of those people who make the news doing dumb things. They passed within feet of the vehicle.
