Eastern Towhee Calling - Drink Your Tea!

Drink Your Tea! Male Eastern Towhee Calling in the morning with the classic territory call. Loud and strong with an extra flourish at the end. Towhees around the eastern U.S. have subtle differences in their calls. The calls of Towhees high in the Smoky Mountains seem to be a bit bolder and have the added emphasis of echoing through the valleys.

Towhee's are on of my favorite backyard birds they display a unique personality and sing their hearts out all day long. Two young Eastern Towhees recently fledged are learning to scratch for their food just like their parents. You can hear one of the parents calling continuously nearby - they have one of the more distinctive calls of eastern U.S. birds. The fledgling were still being fed by the parents at this time.

Video of their Dad making the classic "Drink your tea..." call.

Male Eastern Towhee Territorial Call - A Bold Statement!

The Eastern Towhee's most distinctive call!

The Male Eastern Towhee call at dusk from high in a tree in the Great Smoky Mountains dominates the bird call landscape with the distinctive "Drink-your-tea-eee". From dawn to dusk - This land is his! Towhees are one of my favorite birds. They have a number of appealing habits including constantly flashing the white feathers in their tail while scratching through the underbrush looking for bugs and seeds. Often heard, but rarely seen for long these birds have quite a personality.
