Red Bellied Woodpecker

Two male Red Bellied Woodpeckers get ants and larvae out of an old pine log that makes up part of my Backyard photography stage area (see: https://youtu.be/h-hIt0hqwN0). These are stunning birds and quite sociable you'll see a few nice views of their red belly - while the red head and zebra back are the most noteworthy physical features those names were already taken - so red bellied it is . There had been interest in the woodpecker nest box again so I'm hoping that they move in again this year. Note the shakiness of the video at times, this was filmed hand held at great distance using digital zoom on the SX70 illustrating the challenge of the superzoom cameras.

Woodpecker Couple Inspects Nest Box

A pair of Red Bellied Woodpeckers inspect a new Flycatcher Nest Box. Its now late July and 7 baby Red Bellied Woodpeckers have hatched and fledged in two broods so far this summer so I'm not sure what these two are up to - it could be they just can't resist checking out any potential nest site and give their opinion. Mother woodpecker in particular seems to spend a long time checking from every angle. Some nights the woodpeckers roost in the various nest boxes even though its not breeding season.

Blue Jays Versus Woodpecker

Male Red Bellied Woodpecker joins the Blue Jay Family in the fight for morning peanuts. Presented in real-time it takes about 50 seconds from the time I open the door until the peanuts are gone! Listen for the blue jays imitating a Red Shouldered Hawk call as intimidation to keep squirrels and other birds away while the Jay strike force hits the peanuts.

Red Bellied Woodpecker Inspects and Pecks Inside Nest Box

Red Bellied Woodpeckers inspecting and pecking inside the Woodpecker Nest Box. They inspect a potential house to raise their young very seriously and loudly! Obviously sound wood is very important to them as well as a good fit and comfort. Hopefully this is the year they will pick the house!

Red Bellied Woodpecker Eating Nectar of Giant White Bird of Paradise

Red Bellied Woodpecker feasts on the nectar of the Giant White Bird of Paradise - an amazing tropical plant that is over 20 feet tall and whose flowers dwarf this rather large woodpecker. They are able to grow this tall in Florida after several warm winters without a freeze. They are bird magnets at certain times of the year.

Red Bellied Woodpecker Drumming

Male Red Bellied Woodpecker Drumming on the house just before sunrise is Nature's alarm clock. This is the time of the year when they start to stake out territory and find potential nesting sites. The Woodpecker nest box is ready again this year.

Red Bellied Woodpecker Enjoys Loquat Fruit

Male Red Bellied Woodpecker enjoys eating ripe Loquat Tree fruit. The woodpeckers unique long and raspy tongue is also prominently visible in this closeup. The female can be heard calling loudly nearby. The Loquat tree is an excellent choice for a landscape plant to attract birds as many of them feast on the ripe yellow fruit. It is cold hardy down to about 12 degrees and grows rapidly in Florida.

Red Bellied Woodpecker Nest Box Inspection

A male Red-Bellied Woodpecker performs a very thorough inspection of the Woodpecker Nest Box I installed last year and seems to give it his seal of approval. He knocks on the walls and roof and it sounds nice and solid - a good place to raise a family. I have a camera inside the nest box this year and hopefully they will make a nest there this season and raise their young. The squirrels have shown no interest in it this year so maybe they will leave the woodpeckers alone - I think that is why the woodpeckers failed to use it last year.

Red Bellied Woodpecker in Nest Box

Red Bellied Woodpecker in Nest Box

Our Red-Bellied Woodpeckers decided not to nest in our Woodpecker nest box last spring despite trying it out thoroughly. I think they instinctively knew the location was not perfect. The problem was it was exposed to squirrels - and in the months since they have made it into a "squirrel nest box" by chewing right through two 3/4 inch boards. You will see the result at the end of the video! The only thing that can keep squirrels out of a nest box is a metal plate over the opening - maybe

Dove's may be peaceful but they hold their ground!

Mourning Dove versus Red Bellied Woodpecker
Mirror - Mirror : Mourning Dove versus Red Bellied Woodpecker

A Mourning Dove holds its ground against a female Red-Bellied Woodpecker by facing-off with it wherever she turns. The Dove puffs itself up to look bigger and scarier and stays puffed-up until the woodpecker leaves and then returns to normal. Doves can be tough - this is a rematch of:

So the Dove wins best out of 3 - how about best of 7? You can be sure the woodpecker will get a rematch.
