White Winged Dove

Tame White Winged Dove has no apparent fear of me standing just a few feet away - part of a group of about six that stopped by the Backyard. They are considered an introduced and exotic species in Florida and are common year round in some areas, but not the Backyard. They are rare visitors here. They are beautiful Doves with striking orange eyes surrounded by a light blue eye-shadow accents. Originally a bird of the desert their range is expanding.

Cooper's Hawk Kills Dove At Bird Feeder

A Cooper's Hawk took out a large Eurasian Collared Dove at the bird feeder right before my eyes!  That is the way of Nature.... The big Dove is considered an invasive species in Florida and is probably a choice target of the Hawk due to it's large size and slowness to take off compared to native Mourning Doves. The Hawk was apparently hiding in the dense cover of the nearby oak tree and hit the Dove with an explosion of white feathers from only about 10 feet away with incredible acceleration. The bigger, slower Red Shouldered Hawks could never do that - they need much more room. Only the Red Shouldered Hawk has been seen in the Backyard before so the Cooper's Hawk is a new species documented. The jungle behind the backyard is good  Hawk habitat with dense undergrowth and tall longleaf pine trees, but that has traditionally been the breeding area of the Red Shouldered Hawks. I suspect this Hawk will be back.......it is the new top predator of the Backyard ecosystem and the squirrels need to be wary - I will need to re-examine my feeding practices if these new Cooper's Hawks start staking out the Backyard so that I don't make it any easier for them.

Mourning Dove Preening

Mourning Dove Preening in an Oak Tree as it prepares to bed down for the night. Mourning Doves have some of the most attractive eyes of the backyard birds and, as in this case, they tend to make strong eye contact.

White Winged Dove

White Winged Dove - an attractive but infrequent visitor to the Florida backyard - this one is watching me as closely as I'm watching it. On rare occasions a small flock of these Doves will appear in the cool season - more often they are isolated as in this case or in pairs like the Eurasian Collared Doves that are a bit larger. All the big Doves mix easily with the common Mourning Doves.

Mourning Dove Versus Red Bellied Woodpecker

Video: Woodpecker Versus Dove!

Mourning Dove and Red Bellied Woodpecker
Mourning Dove Fights Off Red Bellied Woodpecker

Dove's may be peaceful but they hold their ground!

Mourning Dove versus Red Bellied Woodpecker
Mirror - Mirror : Mourning Dove versus Red Bellied Woodpecker

A Mourning Dove holds its ground against a female Red-Bellied Woodpecker by facing-off with it wherever she turns. The Dove puffs itself up to look bigger and scarier and stays puffed-up until the woodpecker leaves and then returns to normal. Doves can be tough - this is a rematch of:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4pvHSNVWIk  and again the Dove wins.
So the Dove wins best out of 3 - how about best of 7? You can be sure the woodpecker will get a rematch.

Huge Eurasian Collared Dove in Florida

Video of Huge Eurasian Collared Dove in Florida

Huge Eurasian Collared Dove in Florida - may be a hybrid or "mutant"

This pair of collared-Doves are lighter and a lot larger  than I've seen in the backyard before. See for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfiFOn84PAc
which shows a typically grayer and smaller Eurasian Collared Dover in our yard last winter. These may be hybrids or descendants of breeder's birds in Florida. The larger one is probably a male and he towers over a mature male Common Grackle which is a good sized bird. These big Doves are a bit slow and need to watch out for our resident Red-Shouldered Hawks! What a meal they would make....

Eurasian Collared-Dove Visits the Backyard - Waiting on Owl Eggs!

The Eurasian Collared-Dove is a Rare Visitor to the Backyard

The female Eastern Screech Owl continue to sit in the nest box waiting to start delivering her eggs. She sits in the nest box during the day and goes out at dusk to feed. The male is calling nearby. Eggs should be laid any day now. In the meantime, other visitors keep us entertained in the backyard such as this gorgeous Ring-Necked Dove.
