Meadowlark Singing And Calling - 11 Minutes

Eastern Meadowlark singing at least three variations of a song and  some interesting chattering calls which I have not witnessed before. Watch this gorgeous bird for over 11 minutes and you'll never forget him. Out in the vast grass marshes of the St. Johns River a boundary marker becomes prime territory. One of the most striking and melodious songbirds of the marshlands I am quite lucky to find such a friendly subject to film and in such perfect lighting conditions.

Northern Cardinal Singing Three Songs

Male Northern Cardinal loudly singing three different territorial songs just before sunrise in late February in Florida. Many recorded cardinal calls or songs are rather "wimpy" honestly - underestimating how much Cardinals can dominate the Backyard soundscape. This cardinal is over 200 feet away and 50 feet high in the tallest tree - an important territorial marker for birds - and he has to be heard through all the other birds calls you will hear - notably Grackles and Jays. Cardinals are one of the loudest and strongest singers of the Backyard world. Spring is in the air in Florida and the male cardinal is staking his claim! Mating and nesting comes early in Florida!

Mockingbird Singing

Northern Mockingbird calling from the top of the Backyard oak tree. Mockingbirds are common in many backyards but here they keep a lower profile owing to a large family of Blue Jays that run the backyard. Mockingbirds never come to feeders here, but love birdbaths and prefer fruit and insects they can pick from the trees. Morning is their time to sing from the highest tree, but alas the ever-growing noise pollution of civilization competes with their beautiful songs as you will hear in the middle of the recording.
It is becoming harder and harder to find true silence in Nature.

House Wren Singing a Song

Male House Wren singing and calling his heart out for a mate and to defend the territory around his newly claimed Bluebird Nest Box. I don't have much experience with these birds, this is the land of the Carolina Wrens, but I love this outgoing and tenacious little guy. He has such a presence for a tiny bird and has been carrying on for days and now has a mate - more on that later. Not good Bluebird habitat in the dense high altitude forest of the Great Smoky Mountains, but the Bluebird nest box is a great box for many species.
