The Cardinals are having a nice quiet private meal which is unusual in the Backyard Jungle. They are getting ready to start a family - its that time of year!
Male Northern Cardinal loudly singing three different territorial songs just before sunrise in late February in Florida. Many recorded cardinal calls or songs are rather "wimpy" honestly - underestimating how much Cardinals can dominate the Backyard soundscape. This cardinal is over 200 feet away and 50 feet high in the tallest tree - an important territorial marker for birds - and he has to be heard through all the other birds calls you will hear - notably Grackles and Jays. Cardinals are one of the loudest and strongest singers of the Backyard world. Spring is in the air in Florida and the male cardinal is staking his claim! Mating and nesting comes early in Florida!
A male Northern Cardinal makes a brief visit to the suet feeder, the low sun of late afternoon brings on an unusually lustrous red, but he doesn't find the suet particularly to his liking and faces the age old problem of how to get the grease off its beak!
Male Cardinal singing the Bold Spring Call From the Highest Tree
Cardinals are often one of the last backyard birds to turn in for the night. You can often hear them chirping at the feeder right after the sun goes down and its almost too dark to see. This male Northern Cardinal was singing his heart out at sunset and I wanted to record his strong calls, one of my favorite of the backyard bird world. Ordinarily this would be poor lighting for video or film as the bird will obviously not be clearly seen. But here I was lucky to capture the bird in perfect profile with the sun now below the horizon giving a "shadow puppet" effect and perfectly showing the movement of its beak to form the amazing calls. Keep your camera handy every day in the backyard is an adventure.
