Grackle Versus Woodpecker
Fascinating Bird Behavior! In the fast-paced bird world a 40 second standoff is an eternity. The Big Cheese Grackle of the small Backyard family can really dominate some of the feeders, even owning the Blue Jays. But when the Red Bellied Woodpeckers want to come in to a feeder for a visit they expect the other big birds to clear out of the way. Surprisingly rather than leave, this big Grackle attacks, then tries to intimidate the woodpecker through a long classic stare-down and then attacks again, but no backyard bird dislodges a big woodpecker, the Woody hangs and takes the platform.

Coopers Hawk Preys on White Winged Dove
A Coopers hawk is one of the few avian predators stealthy and agile enough to hunt for birds in the dense jungle undergrowth. Here a small clearing near a major animal trail intersection is one of the few open places and attracts birds and small mammals as well as the predators who prey upon them. Coopers Hawks have a preference for doves, especially the bigger White Winged Doves. They hold down larger prey like these big doves until they pass then fly away with them.

Eastern Meadowlark Songs and Calls
Variety of sounds of Eastern Meadowlarks singing and calling. Eastern Meadowlarks dominate the soundscape of Florida grasslands, ranch lands and grassy marshlands and especially in the few large areas of remaining prairie in Florida.
These stunning birds sing their beautiful flutelike songs from perches with good vantage points such as isolated scrub trees and bushes in grassland and fence posts on range and farm land.
They do sing all winter in Florida where they are permanent residents, but really increase their singing activity in the spring breeding season. They are not too likely to visit backyard feeders unless you are fortunate enough to live near some wide open spaces like a farm or ranch house or perhaps on a very large suburban lot on the order of 5 acres or so.
An Eastern Meadowlark male can sing many different variations of its famous flutelike song. You'll hear a number of variations in the following clips. They also have a variety of calls that you'll hear such as chattering or short buzzes for contact or when they are alarmed or perhaps irritated by photographers in their remote habitat.
A member of the Blackbird family their bright-yellow underparts and striking black chevron across their chests really sticks out when perching. But they spend most of the time on the ground in the grass probing for insects with their long, sharp bills. On the ground, their rather common looking brown-and-black striped upperparts serve well to camouflage the birds among the grass. You can spot their white outer tail feathers easier when they are on the ground.
I find their long claws fascinating – probably good for grasping onto to spindly perches and scratching about among the grass for bugs. Interestingly, there is a very similar, but unrelated bird of the east African grasslands that is called the Yellow-throated Longclaw
Most of the meadowlarks I meet live in the vast open windy prairie and attempts to isolated the meadowlarks songs and calls and filter out wind noise - even when using wind screens are not always successful so forgive the occasional strange sound in the background.
Meadowlark populations are declining due to habitat loss.

Baby Squirrel Rescue Documentary
Mother Gray Squirrel chases a Screech Owl out of his box in mid December and proceeds to make a nest and deliver two kits or kittens as baby squirrels are called at the end of December. The Florida Backyard squirrels usually have two liters a year in early spring and Fall. Late December is an odd time for a squirrel to be giving birth. I can't recall that happening before. In any case, something bad happened to the mother are her helpless kits had to be rescued. If you ever drop off an animal for care at a wildlife rehabilitation center please remember to give a generous donation. They are typically non-profit, staffed largely by volunteers and have limited budgets and any donations really help out in their mission of caring for animals.

Osprey
Always inspiring just to watch an Osprey taking a break in the Backyard, such impressive raptors. This one was catching the last rays of sun sinking in the west so it made for some really clear video. Osprey mating season will begin soon with a lot of sky diving and calling so stay tuned!

Blue Jay's Perfect Imitation of a Red Shouldered Hawk Call
A shy Blue Jay virtuoso – this video is all about the sound - the Jay nearly precisely imitating the call of the Backyard Red shouldered Hawks and constantly practicing, improvising and expanding his repertoire of other calls and songs.
I overlaid the actual red shouldered hawk call with the Blue Jays interpretation and one would be hard pressed to tell the difference, even the cadence is the same and they sound almost as one.
This Jay tends to hide when he practices, likely because the noise can attract attention and in the middle of Winter when there is no real reason to sing or practice singing he just enjoys it and he needs to stay in the dense oak tree cover for safety. He just loves to sing....
He tried his hawk act out on the last remaining feral cat who was unimpressed.

Opossum's Amazing Prehensile Tail Carries Nest Building Material
Many examples of Opossums using their prehensile tails for gathering building materials and carrying them to selected den sites to make comfy nests. In slow motion close-up we can see how they do it, the opossums select materials with their teeth and pass them back through their front feet and then to their back feet and then push it onto the waiting curled tail and then close tight. Like somebody loading their car at a Home Center - it may not always be pretty, but they get the job done!

Virginia Opossums are fascinating animals that live all around us and are often taken for granted.
They are the only marsupials north of Mexico and have a prehensile tail – that is - a tail adapted for grasping and holding objects.
Their long tails are hairless and boneless but full of muscle making them strong - like a fifth limb used for climbing, grasping food items, extra bracing support while digging dens or foraging for food in trees and maybe even hanging by them for short periods while moving about in the trees if they are not too heavy yet –They have five toes on each paw including opposable thumbs so combined with the special tail they are remarkably agile climbers.
But perhaps most interesting is their use of their prehensile tails for gathering building materials and carrying them to selected den sites to make comfy nests and I'll show several examples of opossums large and small.
Opossums (possums) are typically seen walking about with their tails out straight - but they can turn them into perfect grasping limbs when foraging for prime nest material like long leaf pine needles and dried and shredded palmetto leaves behind the Backyard.
In slow motion close-up we can see how they do it, the opossums select materials with their teeth and pass them back through their front feet and then to their back feet and then push it onto the waiting curled tail and then close tight.
Like somebody loading their car at a Home Center - it may not always be pretty, but they get the job done!
I've sung the praises of opossums before, they are great Backyard neighbors, and the fascinating use of their tails is just another example of their uniqueness.

Campark T100 Trail Cameras Survive Flash Flood Film Wildlife
Two Trail cameras I keep in a steep mountain stream bed survived being submerged in a flash flood in late July 2022 and kept working. I've never done a formal review of these cameras so I wanted to tell their fascinating story. Filmed with Campark T100 Trail Camera available at: https://shrsl.com/3nywk

The Dark Side of Crows
Crows are super intelligent and can strategize and execute plans - or scams - if you will - and do what needs to be done to survive. I realized this campground crow family has a racket of sending in their injured member to solicit illegal scraps of food while the others quietly watch in the wings – then swoop in and grab the food when an easy mark falls for their plan - with the injured crow getting what scraps it can. I think it is supposed to eat last - If it gets greedy it gets punished. A plot not unlike something Charles Dickens might have come up with.
