Ovenbirds - The Walking Warblers

Mini-Documentary. The Ovenbird looks so much like a thrush that John James Audubon called it the “Golden Crowned Thrush” in Birds of America. This is the second time I've captured this bird foraging on the forest floor in classic fashion – the ovenbird walks in an exaggerated fashion as it looks for bugs to eat - it doesn't hop like most songbirds. I think the Ovenbirds are living and breeding in the dense forest/jungle behind the Florida backyard although range maps indicate it isn't supposed to breed here they showed up throughout the summer on the trail cameras walking and foraging. I'll pay closer attention next year. They are fascinating birds and while some call them plain I think they are quite stunning and unique warblers. Halesia Carolina, or Carolina Silverbell also called the Mountain Silverbell, opossum wood, Silver Bell and Snowbell tree is a native North Carolina flowering tree that is found in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is stunning in spring bloom where falling petals look like snow covering the ground and it has succulent green fruit that squirrels will sometimes eat, but it is the ripe 4-sided brown seed pod in fall that the squirrels love and although it hasn't been documented on video much before this example the squirrels clearly love this autumn delicacy and can be seen feasting on it, but also leaving some on the tree for later in colder weather. Bot Fly Parasites Infest Backyard Wood Rat

Those Botflies got to itch bad - poor thing! A botfly also written bot fly, bott fly or bot-fly and also known as warbles, warble flies, heel flies, and gadflies, are a family of flies technically known as the Oestridae that lay eggs on mosquitoes who then actually transfer the parasite to the host during biting. This unfortunate Florida Woodrat or Eastern Woodrat with three very active Bot flies wiggling all around its neck about ready to "hatch" is attracted to the temporary daytime location of the Painted Bunting feeder which of course I'll have to move now. The Woodrat is a native, mostly ground dwelling rat that loves the dense wet/dry jungle-like woodland sanctuary behind the Backyard. Also called a Packrat it is similar looking to a very large version of a white-footed mouse and kind of cute in its own way (minus the Botflies of course) - with a bit of a "squirrel-like" facial appearance up close. These rats and native cotton rats are a primary food source for the Bobcats and feral cat that live in the "Jungle" behind the Backyard, their lives tend to be short. Fortunately the Florida squirrels have not had botflies for a few years now. If you keep food sources and dense vegetation away from the house these rats wont bother you and stay in the woods where they belong. Also don't put out more food than can be eaten in a day unless your feeders are on a pole with a baffle to keep critters away and no-mess bird seed will help reduce rodent problems. The eastern wood-pewee is a small olive-brown tyrant flycatcher that is hard to film as it hunts small insects from perches high in mostly deciduous trees. This is the first time I got one on video and they were 20 to 60 feet high in trees at the edge of an opening, their favorite habitat.
