White Winged Dove is Frustrated by Cheerios

Riley Raccoon is late for his breakfast and a huge White Winged Dove finds his plate of plain dry cheerios fascinating - there must be a way to eat these circles. The Blue Jays, crows and Grackles love them and know exactly what to do with them. The Dove continues to be intrigued, but frustrated. How Native "Buffalo Birds" Became Cowbird Pests

Cowbirds are one of the bird species that benefits greatly from human modification of the environment at the expense of other birds. Cowbirds are brood parasites which means they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and do not care for their own young. Their parasitic reproduction strategy is unique among the world's blackbird species. Historically, cowbirds were restricted to the Great Plains in short-grass prairies, where they followed buffalo herds, feeding on insects stirred up by the grazing animals. It was not until the native forests of the eastern United States were opened up and interspersed with agriculture and livestock that cowbirds were able to invade. Robins Bathe in the "Rapids"

Few songbirds like a long soaking bath in the mountain stream more than robins. But recent heavy rain turned the normally relaxing bird bathing area into more like a wirlpool - much to the dissatisfaction of mother robin who really wants her bath.  The robins like water too much not to figure it out – the Dove's may take a little longer. For planning your own backyard bird habitats remember birds love a little movement in the water.

Gulls Feeding on Spring Alewife Fish Run A Mini-Documentary

The worlds largest gulls, the Great Black-Backed Gull, Herring Gulls and a few of the much smaller ring-billed gulls which represent all 3 gull species found in coastal Maine partake in a feeding frenzy resulting from the annual spring run of Alewife fish or River Herring up the East Machias River to spawn in late May 2022. It was cold, foggy, spitting rain, windy and an overall dreary day which is not particularly unusual in coastal Maine in May as I found out, but the light was good enough for video and the scene was fascinating and beautiful. . Young Marsh Rabbit Takes Center Stage

Young Marsh Rabbit Takes Center Stage
With a cute mustache, tiny ears and no tail to speak of this young Marsh Rabbit out on its own now doesn't look much like a rabbit but it is precious as can be and one of the more interesting mammals in the Florida Backyard! That said, this part of the jungle/woods is a dangerous place for the little one to hang out in the open for long periods of time. Good luck little buddy. Amazing Opossum Mothers

A Mother's Day Mini-Documentary - Mother Opossums or “possums” as they are often called are amazing! The opossum is a marsupial, or “pouched” mammal. Members include the kangaroo, koala, Tasmanian devil and our own Backyard Virginia opossums – actually a rather exotic animal that lives in our North American Backyards and we take for granted. American Goldfinch and Pine Siskin Spring Migration

American Goldfinch and Pine Siskin Spring Migration
The American Goldfinch and Pine Siskin spring migration was pretty impressive in mid to late April up in the North Carolina Mountains. One day in early April the resident House Finch couple that call the Backyard home all year were set upon by their avian relatives by the dozens. For two weeks it was several pounds of sunflower chips a day eaten by the hungry finches on their way north and also a lot of stops for water at the mountain stream. 🔴 New HD videos uploaded several days a week. Pileated Woodpeckers Hunt and Eat Juicy Grubs

The Pileated Woodpeckers are finding some huge high-protein grubs or wood boring beetle larvae in that rotting tree stump they've been working on and hearing the activity of the grubs helps the woodpeckers find them. They are smart and use the old stump like a stockpile. Rather than tear it all up at once they are working it slowly and come back for more grubs that will grow in it. Sort of like a grub warehouse!
